Position Summary
The Part-Time Outreach Assistant supports the Library System's outreach, literacy, and community engagement initiatives by assisting with program planning, event coordination, and off-site services. This position helps expand library access beyond physical branches by bringing library services, resources, and programs into the community, particularly to underserved and high-need populations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Outreach & Programming Support
- Assist in planning, organizing, and delivering outreach programs, events, and services.
- Help coordinate literacy initiatives and community-based programming.
- Support mobile library services, pop-up libraries, and community distribution events.
- Set up and break down materials, displays, and equipment for outreach activities.
- Create Program images for branches and proofread descriptions on LibCal
- Work with the genealogy/outreach manager to promote genealogy services and outreach programs through print, digital, and social media channels.
- Collect and analyze program data and community feedback to assess impact and guide future initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Community Engagement
- Represent the library at community events, schools, senior centers, daycare facilities, and local organizations.
- Distribute promotional materials and provide information about library services, programs, and digital resources.
- Assist with building relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
- Plan, coordinate, and implement outreach programs that promote library services, resources, and literacy initiatives throughout Jefferson County.
- Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, schools, senior centers, historical societies, faith-based organizations, and local government agencies in conjunction with programmers and branch staff.
- Identify underserved populations and develop targeted outreach strategies to address community needs.
- Collaborate with branch staff to support system-wide outreach goals and programming.
Administrative & Operational Support
- Track program attendance and assist with basic data collection and reporting.
- Help maintain outreach inventory, including books, supplies, equipment, and promotional items.
- Assist with preparing program materials and kits.
- Perform basic clerical tasks, including filing, data entry, and preparation of handouts.
Customer Service
- Provide courteous, knowledgeable assistance to patrons in both library and outreach settings.
- Assist patrons with library card registration and basic use of library services.
- Promote literacy, digital access, and lifelong learning.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; college coursework in education, communications, social services, or library science preferred.
- Experience working with children, teens, seniors, or community programs preferred.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
- Ability to lift and transport outreach materials (up to 50 pounds).
- Reliable transportation.
- A valid driver's license is required to drive outreach vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in public libraries, education, nonprofit organizations, or community-based programs.
- Familiarity with digital devices, tablets, and basic technology support.
- Experienced with Canva.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.
Work Environment
- Library facilities and off-site community locations.
- Occasional outdoor programming.
- Travel within Jefferson County is required.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly Rate: 14hr
- Part-time employees are not eligible for full benefits per Library System policy, but will receive paid holidays.
Rotating Schedule:
Monday - Thursday 1 pm- 6 pm - Friday 11:30 am - 4:30 pm
Monday - Thursday 1 pm- 6 pm - Saturday 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
The schedule will be flexible depending on the program's schedule.
Pay: From $14.00 per hour
