Paid On-Call Firefighter

The Osseo Fire Department has a long and rich history. Established in 1915, it is one of the oldest fire departments in the area.

Essential Duties:
To protect the lives and property of the community by:

  • Responding to fire calls, both emergency and non-emergency, driving apparatus, operating hoses, pumps, and other related equipment as necessary.
  • Responding to calls for life threatening and non-emergency medical services, performing emergency medical services and rescue activities including administering first aid and CPR, operating EMR equipment such as monitor/defibrillator, performing extrication, and providing other assistance as required.
  • Responding to emergency situations such as rescuing persons, evacuating, securing and coordinating emergency scenes.
  • Assisting other agencies and communities in emergency management functions.
  • Attending regularly scheduled training, drills and monthly departmental meetings.
  • Participating in duty crews, public education, community and other scheduled events.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of apparatus and equipment.
  • Performing other duties as required, assigned or apparent.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least age 18.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Minnesota driver’s license.
  • Must be able to respond within 7 minutes from home or work.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal and driving record background check.
  • Must successfully complete an occupational health examination and physical ability test.
  • Must have commitment to serve the community and a desire to be part of an outstanding team.
  • Must be able to perform all physical duties normally expected of a firefighter, including meeting requirements as established by NFPA Standard 1582 for medical and fitness standards.
  • Must be able to meet minimum requirements set by the OFD for response, training, meetings, and other activities as assigned

◦ 1 meeting night per month

◦ 1 – 2 drill nights per month

◦ Respond to 20% of calls (around 5) per month

◦ Participate in community events such as the Firefighters Dance, Easter Egg Hunt, Night to Unite, Lion’s Roar, Steak Fry, Halloween Parade, and Minidazzle

  • For those with no prior education, must complete 4 classes in your first year of employment with the OFD:

◦ Firefighter I (80 hours)

◦ Firefighter II (40 hours)

◦ HazMat Ops (60 hours)

◦ Emergency Medical Responder (30 hours)

Desired Education:

  • Firefighter 1 Certification, Firefighter 2 Certification, Hazardous Materials Operations Certification is preferred but not required.
  • Emergency Medical Responder Certification is preferred but not required.
  • EVOC Certification is preferred but not required.

Desired Experience:

  • Some experience in a firefighting capacity, or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred but not required.

Essential Abilities:

  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to read, understand and learn rules, regulations, operating manuals and safety instructions.
  • Ability to perform the tasks outlined in NFPA 1001 (Firefighter professional qualifications).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive relationships with co-workers, city staff and the public.
  • Ability to function in a calm and professional manner during stressful emergency situations, and exercise sound judgment regarding the safety of the team and community.
  • Ability to work non-scheduled hours due to emergency calls.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
