Job Description: Firefighter / EMT-Basic (Paid-On-Call)

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Fire Chief and command officers, the Firefighter/EMT-Basic responds to fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency and non-emergency incidents to protect life, property, and the environment. This position performs firefighting, basic life support (BLS) patient care and transport, public education, and station duties in accordance with departmental policies, state regulations, and applicable standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are representative but not all-inclusive:

Emergency Response

  • Responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous conditions, and public service calls.
  • Performs structural firefighting, including fire suppression, ventilation, search and rescue, and overhaul.
  • Provides Basic Life Support (BLS) care in accordance with State of Michigan EMS protocols and local Medical Control Authority (HEMS) guidelines.
  • Assists with patient assessment, treatment, and transport on department ambulances.
  • Operates fire apparatus and EMS vehicles as qualified and authorized.
  • Participates in incident command structure and follows established chain of command.

Training and Readiness

  • Attends required drills, training sessions, and continuing education.
  • Maintains proficiency in firefighting, EMS, and rescue skills.
  • Participates in physical fitness activities to meet job demands.
  • Maintains required certifications and licensure.

Equipment and Station Duties

  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
  • Ensures readiness of firefighting gear, EMS equipment, and supplies.
  • Reports deficiencies, damage, or safety concerns.

Prevention and Public Education

  • Participates in fire prevention programs, inspections, and community outreach.
  • Represents the department in a professional and courteous manner.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Completes accurate and timely incident reports and patient care documentation.
  • Complies with all department policies, NFPA standards, Michigan Bureau of EMS, Trauma & Preparedness, and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License (Class C) with acceptable driving record.
  • Certified Firefighter I & II (State of Michigan) or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • Licensed EMT-Basic in the State of Michigan or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe..
  • Current CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers certification or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • Ability to pass background check, physical examination, and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior firefighting or EMS experience.
  • EVOC/CEVO or equivalent emergency vehicle operations training.
  • Additional certifications (e.g., HazMat Operations, Rescue Technician).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of firefighting techniques, EMS procedures, and safety practices.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress, emergency situations.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment use and maintenance.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work performed in emergency and non-emergency environments, including exposure to:
  • Fire, smoke, extreme temperatures, hazardous materials, and bodily fluids.
  • Requires:
  • Heavy lifting (50–100+ lbs)
  • Climbing, crawling, and confined space operations
  • Extended periods of physical exertion
  • Must be able to wear full PPE including SCBA.

Compensation & Status

  • Paid-On-Call position.
  • Compensation in accordance with the current Fire Department Wage and Pay Scale:
  • Call response, training, and standby rates as applicable.
  • Annual Uniform allowance.
  • Annual Training and Education stipend.

Licensure and Compliance Requirements

  • Must maintain all required certifications and licenses.
  • Must report any change in licensure status, including suspension or revocation, immediately.
  • Subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination for non-compliance.

Probationary Period

  • New members are subject to a probationary period during which performance, attendance, and training progress are evaluated.

Residency Requirement

  • Due to the paid-on-call nature of this position and the need for timely emergency response, members must reside within the City of Gibraltar or a reasonable distance within the surrounding Downriver community to ensure prompt response to incidents.
  • Residency shall be maintained throughout employment. Members who relocate outside of an acceptable response area may be subject to review and possible removal from active status.
