Summary:
Painter II (Intermediate) performs skilled preparation, application, and finishing of interior and exterior surfaces on residential and light commercial projects. This role works independently or as part of a crew and is responsible for delivering consistent finish quality, proper surface preparation, and efficient execution. Painter II provides guidance to entry-level painters and upholds company standards for safety, quality, and professionalism.
Essential Functions:

Performs skilled surface preparation including scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, mudding, and minor repairs

Applies primers, stains, sealers, and finish coatings using brush, roller, and spray equipment

Executes high-quality interior and exterior painting with attention to detail

Reads and interprets scopes of work, work orders, and manufacturer specifications

Sets up and operates spray equipment, pressure washers, sanding tools, ladders, and scaffolding safely

Ensures proper masking, covering, and protection of adjacent surfaces
-
Identifies substrate conditions and selects appropriate products and application methods

Troubleshoots coating failures, adhesion issues, and surface defects
-
Maintains jobsite cleanliness, organization, and equipment upkeep

Documents daily activities, materials used, and progress updates

Provides instruction and guidance to entry-level painters
Other Functions:

Assists with punch list completion, warranty repairs, and special coatings

Supports layout planning, color matching, and finish selection when requested

Participates in safety meetings, training sessions, and toolbox talks

Ensures company vehicles, tools, and sprayers remain clean and operational

Provides customer education on coating care and maintenance expectations
Mental and Physical Demands:

Regular lifting and carrying of 50–75 lbs, and occasional lifting of up to 75-100 lbs

Frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, climbing, and overhead reaching

Works on ladders, scaffolding, elevated platforms, attics, and crawlspaces

Exposure to chemicals, paint fumes, dust, weather, heat, and cold

Requires strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines independently
Supervisory Responsibilities:

May assist in guiding entry-level painters but has no formal supervisory duties
Core Competencies/Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required
-
3–5 years of residential or commercial painting experience

Proficiency in brush, roll, and spray application techniques

Strong knowledge of surface preparation, coatings, and application methods

Ability to read scopes, instructions, and SDS documentation

Strong communication skills and ability to mentor apprentices

Valid California driver’s license with clean driving record
