The Long Law Firm is a boutique firm whose primary office is in downtown Syracuse, with an office opening in Ithaca in March 2026. We represent businesses, municipalities and insureds on a variety of matters including civil litigation, business law, contracts and licensing, tech law, and basic IP issues.

We are in need of a hybrid paralegal/legal secretary "jack-of-all-trades" to handle calendaring, filing, reception, drafting of some legal documents and other basic litigation-related tasks. The work will primarily be focused on our insurance defense practice. This office does not handle consumer law matters, so foot traffic is relatively light, but the right candidate must be willing to take on multiple-roles (e.g., paralegal, receptionist, legal assistant.) We are small, but mighty, so a "can-do" attitude and willingness to take on new challenges is a major plus.

This is a great starting position for a new paralegal, or someone looking to enter the legal industry. If you do not have any previous legal experience, we prefer that you have a paralegal certificate. Experience in litigation is appreciated but not required. We are willing to train the right candidate. We anticipate that the position could lead to other opportunities within the firm.

This position requires some billing of one's time, and experience in that capacity would be an advantage. We are open to discussing part-time arrangements, but would prefer a full-time candidate. This is a small office (for now). Please be a person that is pleasant to be around.

This position is for in-person, as you would be expected to answer the phones, assist with filings, and perform basic clerical tasks in the office.

Qualifications:

  • must have either a four-year degree, paralegal certification or some professional experience in a legal environment;
  • must have a solid proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and other standard office software;
  • must exhibit good attention to detail;
  • familiarity with Clio is a plus;
  • familiarity with use of generative AI is preferred;
  • good writing skills preferred;
  • litigation experience preferred;
  • must be friendly on the phone and in person;
  • must have superior organizational skills;
  • must be willing to learn new skills;
  • must be able to take responsibility for assignments and see them to completion; and
  • must have a "can-do" attitude.

Responsibilities:

  • be a friendly, helpful person who is engaged in their work and eager to complete the team's mission;
  • track deadlines;
  • calendar attorney's schedule;
  • file motions, pleadings and other litigation filings;
  • bill time to various matters, mostly involving insurance defense; and
  • reception and telephone answering.

Perks:

  • health insurance, dental, and a retirement account with a partial matching contribution from the firm;
  • we are firmly committed to treating every member of our team with the respect they deserve; that includes staff;
  • training is treated as necessary and important, rather than an after-thought;
  • no office politics; good work is rewarded;
  • nearby parking with partial parking allowance;
  • lots of restaurants and lunch spots nearby;
  • beautiful historic office building;
  • willing to accommodate team members to help you do your job better, if you need something, tell us, and let's figure out how to make it happen;
  • we don't care whether you are into knitting at home or singing in a punk-metal ska band. We don't judge. Just do good work, go home when you are done, and be yourself.
  • The Long Law Firm, PLLC welcomes all people, regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or disability and proudly supports everyone who believes in the freedom to be themselves.

If you are interested in this position, please include a cover letter and your resume. In your cover letter, or email application, please include a fun fact about yourself.
