Paramedic/Firefighter - Zuni Fire/EMS (Closing: Open Until Filled)

PARAMEDIC/FIREFIGHTER

SALARY: $21.39

GENERAL DEFINITION: The primary responsibility of this position will be to respond to emergency and non-emergency situations to administer basic or advanced emergency medical care and assess injuries and illnesses.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a ranked shift supervisor, with indirect supervision from the Captain or Chief.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: No supervisory duties.

DUTIES:

Performs basic and advanced level of care outlined in the Paramedic scope of practice.

  • Conducts interfacility transports, including but not limited to: overdose, automobile collisions, heart attacks, respiratory problems, and epileptic seizures.
  • Performs Advance Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advance Life Support including finding and recording vital signs, initializing a patient assessment, performing supplying oxygen, controlling bleeding, wound care, splinting, cardiac monitoring, intravenous puncture, emergency childbirth.
  • Acts in the capacity as the lead medical officer when present at a medical incident or emergency.
  • Disperses and maintains record of paramedic approved medication, narcotics, and/or inhalation/Intravenous therapy.
  • Initiates and physically handles safe movement of patients; continues patient care while transporting to healthcare facilities.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation on patient care, assessments and all service reports in a timely manner.
  • Assesses the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed in the need for assistance.
  • Assists in extricating patients from entrapment, assesses the extent of injury, and uses prescribed techniques and appliances as the need arises, provides light rescue service if required.
  • Initiates intravenous fluids to administer medication or drugs, following established protocols or physician orders.
  • Coordinates emergency scenes with other public safety entities utilizing the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

Participates in EMS and Fire related in-service training and demonstrations.

  • Assists in community education programs in injury prevention and selected community health services, including vaccinations for the community.
  • Engages in formal and informal courses relative to emergency medical services, operation of automated medical equipment, firefighting equipment, learning of firefighting techniques and practices.
  • Participates in presentations to all schools and community events.
  • Participate in department physical fitness requirements.

Performs routine maintenance (not requiring a mechanic) on emergency vehicles.

  • Checks emergency vehicles for operational readiness including fluid levels, tires, belts hoses, communication and electrical equipment.
  • Ensures cleanliness of vehicles.
  • Cleans and washes the interior and exterior.
  • Disinfect vehicles before and after each transport.
  • Restocks a variety of supplies in the emergency vehicles.

Maintains duty station work areas and living quarters in a clean and orderly manner.

  • Performs general housekeeping duties.
  • Washes and cleans response vehicles after use and periodically as the need arises.
  • Occasionally will clean fire hoses and firefighting equipment.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly uniform and all program issued equipment.

Basic Structural firefighting awareness and techniques.

  • Preventing, combating and extinguishing fires with the goal of protecting lives, the environment and property.
  • Analyzing hazardous situations and thinking of quick solutions and actions.
  • Teaching and participating in training classes and drills.
  • Performs fire apparatus checks, checking of firefighting equipment, ensures vehicle operations readiness.
  • Responsible for maintaining personal firefighting gear and breathing (SCBA) is in good working condition at all times.
  • Engages in formal and informal courses related to firefighting equipment, learning of firefighting techniques.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services. Knowledge of medical procedures, terminology and medications. Listening skills to understand the patient’s extent of illness or injury. Good knowledge of principles and practices used in modern structural fire suppression and rescue work. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to remain calm and focused in high-stress situations. Ability to follow and assign instructions, as well as read and write them. Considerable knowledge of Incident Management Systems. Ability to write narrative reports. Ability to effectively communicate via two-way radio systems. Compassionate and empathetic towards patients and their families. Detail-oriented and able to maintain accurate records. Knowledge of Pueblo of Zuni master street address guides and rural addressing systems. Knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974 and HIPAA Regulations. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, Tribal employees, medical staff at emergency facilities, and the general public.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent with two (2) years of work experience in emergency medical services.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES: Valid New Mexico Driver's License with no DWI/DUI convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.

  • Must obtain a State of New Mexico Class “E” Driver's License within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must have a State of New Mexico/National Registry License for Paramedic.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS
  • AHA Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider
  • AHA Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) Provider
  • Incident Command System (ICS) Level 100 or higher.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) Awareness (FEMA IS-700 or equivalent)
  • Hazardous Materials: Awareness and Operations Certification – Must obtain within one (1) year of employment (Dependent on course availability).
  • Firefighter I Certification – Must obtain within one year. (Dependent on course availability).
  • Firefighter II Certification – Must obtain within one year. (Dependent on course availability).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Performs strenuous work under hazardous and adverse conditions. Requires arduous physical exertion under unusual circumstances. There will be some standing and/or walking for long periods of time. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl in various situations. Requires frequent lifting of up to 150 lbs. Work is generally performed in indoor and outdoor settings in emergencies and extremely stressful situations. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, smoke, toxic or caustic chemicals, blood borne pathogens, hazardous material and infectious disease. Situations occur where surgical masks, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, firefighting bunker gear and SCBA equipment are needed. High degree of self-control in high stress situations. Must be in very good physical condition.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. The position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug screening for duration of employment. Must undergo and successfully pass a thorough character background check including FBI Fingerprint check. Will be required to pass an annual medical examination. Willing to respond to periodic return to duty calls. Work is set under a strict schedule that includes days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be insurable. Due to access to confidential patient information, strict confidentiality of all information must be maintained at all times.
