Parks Maintenance Field Worker -Seasonal/Temporary

Job Description

This position is employed only seasonally and/or part-time during the year with the City of Longview. A variety of duties and tasks may be assigned. Refer to the internal department for a specific duties listing.

Position Information:
This position is responsible for performing functions that support the maintenance parks and the landscaping at other City-owned properties, including around facilities and rights-of-way medians. This work includes maintenance tasks related to horticulture, turf, arboriculture, facilities, infrastructure, and special events, as well as administrative and safety tasks related to these areas.

Essential Job Duties

• Performs a variety of grounds maintenance duties in park areas, landscapes, and/or other related areas, including mowing and edging turf; watering; weeding; pruning trees, shrubs, and hedges; and/or, performing other related activities.
• Maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of park grounds (turf, shrubs, trees, and vegetation), facilities (restrooms, offices, and picnic shelters) and infrastructure (parking lots, tables, benches and sports fields/courts).
• Assists full-time staff with basic construction or repair tasks.
• Operates a variety of light-to-medium equipment and/or large trucks, which may include dump trucks, mowers, trucks, and/or other related equipment.
• Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• 18 years old or older.
• Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Driver’s License, except for corrected vision.
• First Aid/CPR Certification or obtain within ninety (90) calendar days or as scheduled.
• Traffic Control Flagging Card or obtain within ninety (90) calendar days or as scheduled.
• Submit a copy of current State employment driving record abstract to verify their eligibility to drive City vehicles prior to hire.

Ideal Candidate Information

Required Knowledge and Ability:

• Experience with or interest in learning methods and techniques of park care and operations.
• Experience with or interest in learning maintenance and repair techniques regarding park structures, facilities, and irrigation systems.
• Experience with or interest in learning methods and techniques of performing landscaping tasks on turf, plants, and shrubs.
• Customer service objectives and strategies.
• Performing manual labor.
• Adhering to safe work practices.
• Understanding and carrying out written and oral instructions.
• Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
