Parks/Cemetery Maintenance Worker

Position summary
Performs manual and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, upkeep, and improvement of parks, grounds, and cemetery facilities. Responsibilities include landscaping, mowing, equipment operation, burial preparation assistance, and general grounds maintenance. This position supports daily operations and helps ensure public areas are safe, clean, and well maintained.
Essential Personnel Designation
This position may be designated as essential personnel. In the event of a natural or manmade disaster, the employee may be required to be available for immediate call-in and response.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential and other important duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Mow, edge, trim, and maintain parks, rights-of-way, and cemetery grounds.
Assist with grave preparation, burial setup, and restoration of cemetery sites.
Maintain and clean park facilities, restrooms, shelters, and common areas.
Plant, water, prune, and remove trees, shrubs, and flowers as needed.
Operate and maintain mowers, trimmers, blowers, small tractors, and other grounds equipment.
Pick up litter and debris and maintain safe, clean public spaces.
Assist with park improvements, special projects, and event setup/teardown.
Report safety hazards, vandalism, or maintenance needs to supervisors.
Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public when performing assigned duties.
Support other Public Works operations and duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
Must successfully complete and maintain a criminal background check, drug screening, and pre-employment physical examination.
Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Must be able to work on call, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting, digging, bending, and prolonged standing or walking.
Must comply with all Public Works safety policies, procedures, and work rules.
Required Education, Experience, Certifications & Skills
High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
Experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, cemetery operations, or public works preferred.
Ability to operate lawn maintenance equipment, hand tools, and light machinery.
Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work.
Ability to follow instructions, work independently and as part of a team, interact respectfully with the public, and adhere to safety procedures.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, physical, and criminal background check.

Salary and Classification
Hourly Rate: $16.44 - $23.83, paid bi-weekly, depending upon experience and qualifications.
FLSA: Non-Exempt.
Position Status
