Twigs to Trees Child Development Center is a nature-based, relationship-centered child development program serving infants, toddlers and preschoolers in North Long Beach. We are a growing program funded through California Child Care and Development Program (CCTR) and are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented fiscal professional to support the financial and accounting operations of our center.
We are specifically seeking someone with experience supporting state-funded or federally funded early childhood programs such as:
- CCTR
- CSPP
- Head Start/Early Head Start
- Other subsidized child development or nonprofit education programs
This role is ideal for someone who understands the importance of compliance, organization, audit readiness and accurate fiscal recordkeeping within publicly funded programs.
Position Summary
The Part-Time Bookkeeper / Accounting & Fiscal Support Specialist will oversee day-to-day bookkeeping, fiscal organization, payroll support, financial reporting and audit preparation for the center.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, proactive, trustworthy and experienced in maintaining accounting systems that are clean, accurate, and audit-ready throughout the year.
This person will help create and maintain systems that support strong fiscal accountability and compliance with state and/or federally funded child development program requirements.

Key Responsibilities Bookkeeping & Accounting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using QuickBooks
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards and financial statements
- Track expenses, reimbursements, invoices and payments
- Maintain organized digital and physical financial records
- Monitor coding and categorization of expenses
- Support budget tracking and expenditure monitoring
- Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
- Maintain organized vendor files and payment records
- Ensure all receipts, invoices and supporting documentation are properly collected, scanned, labeled and filed
Fiscal Organization & Audit Readiness
- Develop and maintain systems to ensure fiscal records remain audit-ready throughout the program year
- Organize documentation for annual audits, reviews, monitoring visits and fiscal reporting requirements
- Maintain organized supporting documentation for purchases, contracts, payroll, reimbursements and program expenses
- Assist with preparation of financial reports and documentation requested by auditors, accountants, consultants or funding agencies
- Help ensure compliance with state and/or federally funded child development program fiscal requirements
Payroll & Timekeeping Support
- Support payroll processing and payroll record organization
- Review and monitor employee timecards for accuracy and completeness
- Assist with tracking staff hours, attendance, leave balances and payroll documentation
- Coordinate with payroll providers and/or administrative staff as needed
- Help maintain organized payroll records and supporting documentation
Administrative & Operational Support
- Maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information
- Communicate professionally with leadership, vendors, consultants and staff
- Recommend improvements to fiscal systems and organizational processes
- Assist leadership with financial organization and reporting needs as the program grows
Qualifications Required
- Experience in bookkeeping and/or accounting support
- Experience using QuickBooks
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
- Experience preparing and maintaining audit-ready records
- Experience supporting payroll and/or timekeeping systems
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently and manage deadlines
- Proficiency with Google and/or Microsoft
- Experience supporting nonprofit, education, child development or publicly funded programs
Strongly Preferred
- Experience with CCTR, CSPP, Head Start or other subsidized child development programs
- Experience with California Department of Social Services or Department of Education fiscal requirements
- Experience with nonprofit accounting practices
- Experience supporting annual audits or fiscal reviews
- Familiarity with child care subsidy and contract funding structures
Schedule & Work Environment
- Part-time position
- Flexible schedule
- Approximately 8–16 hours per week
- Hybrid schedule
- Candidate should be available to work in-person at least periodically for filing, organization and fiscal review meetings
Compensation
Estimated Pay Range:
$30–$40 per hour depending on experience and qualifications
