Scope

The custodian serves the campus with flexibility, grace, and a servant’s heart. This role performs custodial duties in and around campus facilities, responds to emergency service needs, coordinates setup and takedown for a wide range of campus and community events, works closely with staff and guests to meet custodial needs, and helps resolve issues to support safe and efficient campus operations.


Key Duties & Responsibilities

(include, but are not limited to)

  • Reports directly to the Facilities Manager and communicates any issues that require attention.
  • Performs routine and comprehensive custodial maintenance throughout campus facilities.
  • Vacuums, shampoos, and spot-cleans carpets; maintains solid-surface floors; dusts woodwork and furniture; washes windows.
  • Removes trash and recycling across campus.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and stocks restrooms, kitchens, classrooms, offices, and common areas.
  • Maintains clean, organized storage and custodial closets.
  • Responds to emergency custodial requests.
  • Coordinates and completes setup and takedown of furniture and equipment for campus and community events.
  • Replaces light bulbs and lighting accessories.
  • Assists with refinishing tile floors.
  • Identifies stains and uses appropriate chemicals for removal.
  • Operates custodial equipment including vacuums, power scrubbers, floor machines, polishers, and related tools.
  • Performs or reports preventative maintenance needs.
  • Assists ministerial staff and guests as needed.
  • Secures the campus at the end of each shift.

Ability to:

  • Work safely with cleaning chemicals.
  • Properly dispose of hazardous materials and fluids.
  • Identify stains and select appropriate chemicals for removal.
  • Operate manual and power custodial equipment.
  • Work effectively in and around the public.
  • Perform physical labor.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Demonstrate consistent and reliable attendance.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods for cleaning, maintaining, and preserving a variety of surfaces.
  • Proper use and handling of chemicals in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Current CPR and first aid training preferred.

Experience:

  • 3–5 years of custodial experience in a commercial or school setting preferred, but not required.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted, and to bend, stand, climb, and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to work safely in an environment containing chemicals, cleaning materials, dust, and noise.
  • Routinely required to work in inclement weather.
  • This shift works primarily independently; must be self-motivated, able to work from a task list, and willing to request additional tasks when needed.

Work Schedule

  • 25–29 hours per week.
  • Sunday–Thursday, beginning at 2 pm; shifts end between 7:00–8:30 pm.
  • Flexibility for overtime or adjusted hours during special events.
  • Occasional Saturdays may be required.
