DEPARTMENT: Coroner FSLA STATUS: Non-Exempt
SALARY: $38.59/hr max

Include but not limited to investigations of deaths occurring within the jurisdiction as required by law. This includes responding to death scenes, phone investigations, and death notifications. Conducting investigations including interviews, securing of records and collection of evidence, securing medical records and taking photographs. The investigator is also responsible for arranging or providing transport of the deceased by the investigator or transporter. Perform other duties, tasks and office functions as determined and assigned by the Coroner or Chief Deputy Coroner. Taking rotating call shifts in addition to scheduled office hours. However, subject to call 24- hours per day, seven days per week.

DUTIES:

· Ability to maintain confidentiality and a positive work environment under stressful situation.

· Manage investigations to determine cause of death and manner of death such as homicide, suicide, accidental, or natural. Testify in court or inquest when required.

· Develop and maintain positive working relationship with the Prosecutor, Law Enforcement, Pathologists, Hospitals, Medical Providers, Attorneys, Insurance Companies, Families, and Funeral Service Providers.

· Interviewing person(s) with potential knowledge concerning circumstances surrounding a death investigation. Securing complete medical and legal information necessary for conducting investigations.

· Assist family members and legal next of kin of the deceased through the death investigation and decision-making process.

· Maintain clear communications with the Chief Deputy Coroner and the Coroner.

· Other duties that may be assigned as needed.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATION:

Education equivalent to a high school diploma and equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience, which has provided the knowledge, skills, and the abilities cited above. Must successfully pass background investigation relevant to the position and remain in good standing for the duration of employment with the County. This may include a request by the coroner for the incumbent to submit and successfully pass a polygraph examination or computer voice stress analysis (CVSA).

TRAINING:

The Deputy Coroner will be required to attend the Indiana Coroner Training Board 40- Hour Medicolegal Death Investigation Training Couse and pass a state board exam as required by the State of Indiana. Also, maintain yearly continuing education as required by the state.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from other agencies and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished with written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; knowledge of modern methods and techniques of record keeping; knowledge of computers; skills in data entry and work processing; ability to type; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public; ability to work on own initiative. Ability to make decisions in accordance with the laws, ordinances, regulations and established policies.
