About this Opportunity
A Part Time Fire Inspector/Investigator will independently conduct state mandated fire inspections as required by the North Carolina Fire Code as well as perform plan reviews and field inspections for new construction projects. This position also responds to emergency scenes and provides technical support for fire origin/cause investigations while working closely with the Fire Marshal.
Education and Experience
Associate degree in fire science, fire technology, fire protection, fire engineering, arson investigation, building design, construction, fire/business, public administration, or a related field plus one year of responsible experience performing fire inspections, investigations, and related work such as plan review, construction, and/or building inspections; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Physical Requirements
Work involves considerable walking, climbing, bending, stooping, lifting (up to 50) pounds for checking fire extinguishers; looking overhead; and/or working in small/cramped areas; and using small hand tools (pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, ect) while performing inspection duties. Work at elevated levels on roofs, or on a ladder or lift up to 25 feet, when performing inspections. Inspects all types of commercial buildings for life safety and fire protection equipment, systems, processes, and hazards. Distinguishers colors to read hazardous materials fire diamonds (704 placards) and to examine electrical or alarm panel wiring and panel status indicators. Inspects fire alarm systems with audible and visual warning signals. Photographs fire hazards. Issues permits as necessary. Enters fire inspection report data and information in the field from inspections into a computer record system. Operates a motor vehicle requiring a standard North Carolina Driver’s license to travel to inspection sites. This position is subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, dusts, odors, mists, gases, or poor ventilation, which may require the use of basic filtration mask. This position is subject to environmental conditions of activities occurring both indoor and outdoor. Operates a variety of office equipment. Uses appropriate personal protective equipment.
