Position Description

Performs specialized duties in the Fire and Rescue Department, including apparatus operation, EMS, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, fire suppression, equipment testing, inspections, training, and resource management. In non-routine situations, employees at this level typically exercise initiative and independent judgment.

Incentives for cleared Advanced Life Support providers, up to 10% above hourly salary, depending on certification level.

Position Objectives

  • Drives a fire engine, ladder truck, tanker, or rescue truck to and from emergency and nonemergency events.
  • Operates a fire engine, at draft or fire hydrant.
  • Inspects vehicles and mechanical equipment to ensure that they are working properly, and reports malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment and maintains vehicle logbook.
  • Trains Firefighters in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of firefighting and rescue apparatus.
  • Provides emergency medical care to stabilize the condition of the critically ill/injured prior to and during transport to a medical facility.
  • Determines the nature and extent of injury or illness, establishes priorities for required emergency care, and determines if Advanced Life Support Care or medivac is needed.
  • Drives emergency vehicles to and from emergencies.
  • Ensures that the ambulance is maintained ready to respond to emergency calls.
  • Responds to accidental and intentional releases of hazardous materials.
  • Participates in firefighting, rescue, and EMS duties.
  • Prepares and presents in-station drills.
  • Participates in the physical fitness program.
  • Assists with orientation, training and mentoring of new firefighters and firefighter/medics in their probationary year. Assists newly promoted technicians in their respective specialties; Assists in planning and administration of general shift training.
  • Performs related duties.

Desirable Training and Experience

  • Thorough knowledge in fire, rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency service delivery.
  • Ability to think and act quickly and appropriately in all situations.
  • Extensive knowledge of the geography of the county including street system and physical layout.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written and electronic reports.
  • Ability to work with related agencies on local, state, and federal levels, such as law enforcement, forestry, environmental protection, health, and emergency management.
  • Ability to function as a leader, follower, or advisor based on the prevailing situation at the scene of an emergency and in the stations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and public.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results. During high-risk activities, the supervisor may provide direct supervision of work.
