Part Time Garden Coordinator (26-27 SY)

Capital City Garden Coordinator:


The Garden Coordinator is responsible for engaging the school community in the planning, care, and maintenance of school gardens and for using gardening as a vehicle to teach environmental stewardship and build community.


The Garden Coordinator position is part-time (.5) – the equivalent of 20 hours per week. The Garden Coordinator reports to the Director of Enrichment and has no direct reports. The Garden Coordinator is a 10-month position, which is exempt and therefore not eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.


The hours and schedule of the Garden Coordinator may be different from other 10-month employees to meet the needs of the position; a weekly/monthly schedule will be developed and approved by the Head of School at the start of the school year.


Responsibilities of the Garden Coordinator position in the following categories include:


Garden curriculum/instruction

  • Working with teachers to develop a garden curriculum connected to learning expeditions.
  • Surveying teachers about garden use and developing curriculum and service learning plans based on information provided by teachers.
  • Leading whole/half class sessions in the outdoor classroom with the assistance of classroom teachers.
  • Developing year-round lesson plans and curriculum maps for several grades as pilot projects.
  • Participating in ongoing documentation of student projects through photographs and transcriptions of students’ words. Helping teachers assess the level of learning. Encouraging building stewardship to garden space among students, staff, and volunteers.


Technical gardening work

  • Working with the garden team to establish ecological demonstration gardens and an outdoor classroom and develop a work plan for the space for the next several years. Maintaining the garden with students and volunteers, which may include weeding, planting, watering, maintaining the irrigation system, IPM (Integrated Pest Management), compost maintenance, effective energy use, and fruit tree care.
  • Creating a planting plan that includes: crop rotation, planting logs, and harvesting logs.
  • Developing a garden journal with to-do lists for each season.
  • Acting as an on-site naturalist by becoming familiar with the garden environment.


Program Management

  • Working with school operations team and garden planning committee to acquire tools, and planting materials as necessary and/or budget them for the next season.
  • Coordinating high school service hours and parent volunteers.
  • Assisting with grant writing and reporting. Helping to identify appropriate grants for specific projects.
  • Co-organizing community workday(s) with the garden planning committee and /or PSA.
  • Scheduling and leading monthly garden committee meetings and reporting updates.
  • Attending school garden-related workshops and professional development. Networking with local school gardens, partner organizations and asking for support when needed.


Required Qualifications:

  • 2-5 years of experience working with schools and/or community organizations
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree or comparable training/experience
  • Experience working with diverse groups PK-12th students
  • Gardening expertise specialized in organic and sustainable landscaping
  • Physical ability to lift 50lbs of materials
  • Strong project management experience
  • Well-organized with time, materials, and documentation
  • Spanish-speaking preferred


In addition to the above requirements, staff members must meet the requirements of all hires at Capital City including a criminal background check.
