Part-Time In-Person Reading and Math Tutor (Title I)

Part-Time Reading and Math Tutor (Title I)

Abacus Mind Math Tutors, Inc. | Birmingham, AL| Part-Time, Contract | Fall 2026

Abacus Mind Math Tutors, Inc. is hiring Alabama-certified teachers to deliver small-group reading and math tutoring at private school Birmingham City. These positions support Title I equitable services for the 2026-27 school year through a contract with the School Board of Birmingham City Schools.

If you hold a valid Alabama teaching certificate and want structured, meaningful part-time work on a flexible schedule, this role delivers exactly that. You'll work on-campus at private schools throughout the county, serving students identified for Title I support in reading and/or math.

What You'll Do

Tutoring sessions take place at each private school site in a district-approved location. During the school year, groups are capped at six students. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering small-group reading and/or math tutoring sessions at assigned private school campuses
  • Administering student assessments before services begin, at mid-year, and at the end of the year
  • Monitoring and documenting academic progress after every 10 sessions and reporting results to the district within one week
  • Participating in bi-weekly cooperative planning with each private school teacher to align tutoring with classroom instruction
  • Maintaining a daily check-in at each school site and keeping attendance records available to the district daily
  • Communicating with parents within 24 hours of any contact and maintaining a parent contact log accessible to the district
  • Submitting attendance and student roster documentation monthly in support of invoicing
  • Participating in continuous training provided by Abacus Mind Math Tutors on curriculum, strategies, and materials

All instruction must be secular, neutral, and non-ideological. Tutors may not engage in team teaching or cooperative instructional activities with private school staff, or participate in any school's religious activities.

What You Need

A valid State of Alabama teaching certificate in the subject area and grade levels you'll be tutoring is required. Candidates holding an Alabama Statement of Eligibility may be considered on a provisional basis. Applicants who can demonstrate subject-area mastery through a Alabama subject-area test and qualify for a Birmingham City Adjunct certificate will also be considered; the private school must approve this path.

All candidates must be able to pass a Level 2 background check under the Jessica Lunsford Act. Fingerprinting is conducted through Birmingham Public Schools, and the cost is the responsibility of the individual.

Strong organizational skills matter here. You'll be tracking attendance daily, documenting parent contacts, maintaining lesson plans visible during LEA visits, and contributing to quarterly reports. Comfort working across multiple campuses is a plus.
