Part-Time Medical Assistant

Job Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a vital role in providing support to the Nurse Practitioner and other healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality care for patients undergoing medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders. The MA assists in clinical procedures, patient care, and administrative tasks to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the clinic.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care:

  • Welcome and prepare patients for their appointments, taking and recording vital signs and medical histories.
  • Assist the Nurse Practitioner during patient examinations and procedures.
  • Provide patient education on medication, treatment plans, and general health guidance, as directed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe patient care environment.

Clinical Duties:

  • Prepare and administer medications under the supervision of the Nurse Practitioner.
  • Perform routine lab tests (e.g., urine drug screens), collect and process specimens, and ensure accurate documentation.
  • Assist with wound care, vaccinations, or other clinical interventions as required.
  • Maintain and update patient records in the electronic medical records (EMR) system.
  • Observe and report to the facility’s Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse reactions and side effects to medication exhibited by patient.

Administrative Duties:

  • Schedule and confirm patient appointments, manage follow-up reminders, and coordinate referrals as needed.
  • Answer phones, address patient inquiries, and communicate effectively with the care team.
  • Order and maintain clinic supplies, ensuring proper inventory levels.
  • Assist in the creation and distribution of patient education materials.

Compliance and Confidentiality:

  • Adhere to all clinic policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and patient privacy regulations.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and staff meetings as requested.

Qualifications

Education & Certification:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant program from an accredited institution preferred.
  • Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA/RMA) preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in a clinical setting, especially in substance use treatment or behavioral health, is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with MAT protocols and medications (e.g., buprenorphine, methadone) is a plus.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with patients, families, and the care team.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Proficiency in EMR systems and basic computer skills.
  • Empathy, compassion, and a non-judgmental approach to patient care.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle sensitive patient interactions with professionalism.
  • Occasional lifting and moving of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Part Time 15-25 hours per week, May require flexible hours, including some evenings and approximately 1-2 Saturdays per month, to meet patient needs.
