Part-Time Plumbing Inspector

Overview

The Charter Township of Brownstown is seeking a qualified Part-Time Plumbing Inspector to provide inspection services on an as-needed basis. This position is responsible for inspecting new and existing plumbing systems in residential and commercial properties to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and safety standards. Duties include conducting construction plan reviews, performing on-site inspections, documenting findings, and working collaboratively with other trade inspectors to support the Township’s building and code enforcement operations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Receives proposed construction plans for plumbing installation or upgrade and evaluates for conformance to codes and ordinances.
  • Provides information and feedback to contractors and citizens concerning plumbing requirements and compliance issues. Recommends corrective action as necessary.
  • Travels to construction sites and inspections work to assure compliance with approved permits. Inspects sanitary and storm sewers, drainage, water flow, venting, and other issues for compliance with plumbing codes.
  • Approves project work at various steps and at final inspection. Issues violation notices and schedules re-inspections, if necessary.
  • Prepares and maintains records of permits, inspections, complaints, and investigations.
  • Provides technical information and advice to residents related to plumbing installation practices, safety concerns and possible hazards.
  • Confers with Building Official on noncompliance cases, prepares detailed reports and may assist in preparing for litigation as needed.
  • Works in cooperation with building, housing, mechanical, and electrical inspectors on matters of integration and common concern.
  • Serves as advisor on municipal construction matters as requested and may provide assistance in developing/ refining codes to current practice. Reviews bids for City building projects.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Building Official.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by vocational training in engineering techniques, construction technology, or a related field.
  • Five or more years experience in code enforcement, construction inspection, or related field, or any combination of education and experience which would qualify the individual for registration as a plumbing inspector and plan reviewer under the rules of Act 54 of the Public Acts of 1986.

Certifications/ Licenses/ Registrations

  • Valid Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Current certification as a Plan Reviewer and Plumbing Inspector with the State of Michigan.
