Part Time SAT & ACT Tutor (1 year experience)

SAT & ACT Tutor Pollak Tutors | New Providence, NJ | Part-time

About Pollak Tutors

Pollak Tutors has been helping middle and high school students succeed academically and on standardized tests for over a decade. We're not a franchise, chain, or test-prep factory. We're a small, professional practice built on a simple belief: every student is capable of doing the work. It’s our job to help them believe that.

Our office in New Providence, NJ is a place students actually want to come. It's calm, professional, and designed to make learning feel like something worth taking seriously. The same goes for the people who work here.

How We Work

At Pollak Tutors, we use a Socratic approach: the student does most of the talking, the tutor does most of the listening, and we teach through guided discussion. In a great tutoring session, the tutor doesn't talk at the student; instead, we ask the right questions until the students figure it out for themselves.

When a student gets something wrong, we aren't afraid to say so, and then we use that moment to build deeper understanding. That takes confidence and skill. Our best tutors know how to be direct without being discouraging and how to hold a high standard while making a student feel capable of meeting it.

We give realistic advice to students and families, and we've built our reputation on results and straight talk not on telling people what they want to hear.

About This Role

SAT & ACT Tutors at Pollak Tutors teach small group classes and work 1:1 with students on all aspects of standardized test preparation. Tutors are expected to teach confidently across all sections of both the SAT and ACT.

Sessions are individualized to target specific areas of weakness and take place after school, evenings, and weekends during the school year. Tutors review practice tests and use them to direct their lessons, so strong test analysis skills are essential. We give tutors wide latitude to determine the program for each student, and we expect them to use that latitude well.

This position offers a flexible schedule that can grow with you. Compensation is competitive and hourly. We reward tutors who invest in their students and who contribute to the growth of the business.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong, demonstrable content knowledge across all SAT and ACT sections — particularly math through pre-calculus/trigonometry and grammar/usage
  • Genuine familiarity with both tests: structure, scoring, question types, and the strategic differences between them
  • Experience analyzing practice tests to identify patterns in student errors and prioritize instruction accordingly
  • Experience working with teenagers — tutoring, teaching, coaching, or a related role
  • Ability to teach test-taking strategy, not just content — timing, process of elimination, triage, and when to guess
  • Excellent communication with both students and parents
  • Comfort delivering direct, specific feedback — and doing it with care
  • Strong academic background that reflects a real love of learning
  • Reliability: punctuality, responsiveness, and follow-through
  • Availability to meet students in person in New Providence, NJ (online sessions also available)
  • Familiarity with the digital SAT and Enhanced ACT
  • Special education or learning differences experience a plus

Who Thrives Here

Our best test prep tutors tend to be current or former classroom teachers — especially in math or English — who want more flexibility and direct impact than a traditional teaching role allows, or experienced tutors who are done working for companies that hand them a script and expect them to follow it.What they have in common: they know their content cold; they get genuinely engaged when a student is stuck; they push back when a student's approach isn't working; and they take real pride in score results.

If you're looking for a place to clock hours and run through a workbook, this isn't the right fit. If you want to do meaningful, high-stakes work with students who need someone to challenge them and believe in them at the same time — we'd like to talk.
