POSITION SUMMARY:
The Part-Time Sound Board Operator / Mixed Media Computer Operator is responsible for operating and supporting live performance audio, recorded cues, and media elements for performances at The Groundlings Theatre.
This role manages real-time sound mixing using the Mackie VLZ4 house board and executes QLab cues for audio and video playback in a fast-paced improvisational and sketch comedy environment. The position requires strong technical proficiency, the ability to troubleshoot audio and video systems quickly, and the adaptability to make on-the-spot adjustments during live performances and rehearsals. Working closely with performers and production staff, this role plays a key part in delivering seamless, high-quality live shows in a collaborative and creative theatre setting.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
■ Operate the Mackie VLZ4 house sound board for live performances and rehearsals.
■ Execute and manage QLab audio and video cues, including real-time adjustments as needed.
■ Mix live audio for handheld, headset, and hairline microphones as well as the live house band in a fast-paced theatre environment.
■ Troubleshoot and resolve audio and video technical issues before and during performances.
■ Monitor sound quality and maintain consistent audio levels throughout performances.
■ Inspect, maintain, and replace audio and video equipment as necessary, including cables, microphones, projectors, and related components.
■ Collaborate closely with directors, performers, stage management, and production staff to support creative and technical needs.
■ Adapt quickly to script changes, improvisational elements, and on-the-spot edits.
QUALIFICATIONS
■ Demonstrated proficiency in live audio mixing, preferably on a Mackie VLZ4 or comparable analog console.
■ Strong working knowledge of QLab programming and live cue execution.
■ Experience troubleshooting audio and video systems in live performance settings.
■ Familiarity with wireless handheld, headset, and hairline microphone systems.
■ Previous theatre production experience preferred; experience in improv or sketch comedy strongly recommended.
■ Ability to remain calm and responsive under live performance pressure.
■ Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work professionally with creative teams
SCHEDULE AND TRAINING
Evening availability is required, as typical call times are between 5:00—6:00pm and are occasionally earlier. Shifts range from 5—8 hours, depending on rehearsal and performance schedules. Friday and Saturday availability is required.
Paid, hands-on training will be provided prior to scheduled shows, based on mutual availability.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

■ Ability to remain seated or standing for extended periods during rehearsals and performances (up to 8 hours per shift).
■ Ability to use hands and fingers to operate sound boards, computers, and related technical equipment.
■ Ability to work in low-light environments typical of live theatrical productions.
■ Ability to hear and distinguish audio levels and frequencies in a live theatre environment.
■ Ability to communicate effectively in a performance setting.
■ Ability to occasionally lift and/or move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
■ Ability to access control booths, backstage areas, and other theatre spaces, which may include stairs.
