About us: We're a dynamic and growing disability advocacy and legal services advisory agency specializing raising awareness for and protecting the rights of disabled individuals, particularly those in recovery from substance use disorder. Our mission is to protect the rights of individuals in recovery from substance use disorder in need of housing services and access to support. As part of our mission, we are seeking a highly-motivated attorney to join our team on a part time basis to assist in reviewing advocacy opportunities, instances of housing discrimination, and filing and pursuing cases in furtherance of our advocacy mission.
About the role: We are looking for a dedicated and passionate attorney to join our team as a Part-Time (or contract) Staff Attorney in North Carolina. This role is ideal for a new attorney interested in pursuing a career in disability advocacy or housing law, or an experienced attorney who is looking to spend some time to give back to a community in need of advocacy for their rights. We anticipate this position to require between 5 and 15 hours per week, and will be paid on an hourly basis.
Responsibilities:
- File Pre-Prepared Complaints: Submit pre-drafted complaints and related documents to the appropriate administrative agencies or venues; ensure accuracy and compliance with filing requirements.
- Review Provided Case Materials: Review case summaries, discrimination reports, and supporting documentation to understand the factual background before or after filing.
- Communicate With Opposing Counsel: Initiate or respond to communications from opposing counsel as directed; relay information, requests, or clarifications to the team lead promptly.
- Handle Settlement Discussions: Participate in informal settlement conversations under the guidance of the team lead; communicate offers, counteroffers, and outcomes clearly and promptly.
- Prepare and Submit Routine Documents: Draft or file limited-scope documents such as notices, correspondence, settlement agreements, or compliance documents as instructed by the team lead.
- Provide Case Updates: Deliver timely written summaries of all communications, filings, and settlement activity; highlight required follow-ups and upcoming deadlines.
- Professional Representation: Maintain professionalism and adherence to ethical standards in all communications and interactions.
- Coordinate With Team Lead: Confirm availability for assignments, align on case strategy, and flag issues requiring team-lead involvement.
Requirements:
- Bar admission in the State of North Carolina, in good standing
