Part-time Transportation Driver

The Transportation Driver supports the mission of Southern Dominion Health System, Inc (SDHS) by providing safe, reliable transportation for patients to and from medical, dental, and behavioral health appointments. This position plays a critical role in reducing barriers to care and improving access for underserved and vulnerable populations.

1. Operates organization-owned vehicles safely and in compliance with all traffic laws and safety regulations.

2. Assists patients in and out of the vehicle, including those with limited mobility; operate wheelchair lifts/ramps and secure mobility devices.

3. Plans and follow efficient routes; monitor traffic and weather conditions to ensure timely transport.

4. Vehicle Maintenance & Cleaning:

· Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections (fuel, fluids, tires, lights, and safety equipment).

· Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the vehicle interior and exterior in accordance with infection control standards.

· Ensure the vehicle is stocked with necessary supplies (e.g., cleaning materials, safety equipment).

· Report mechanical issues, damage, or safety concerns promptly.

5. Maintains accurate daily trip logs, mileage records, and patient transport documentation.

6. Coordinates with SDHS staff regarding schedules, delays, or patient concerns.

7. Maintains strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and provide respectful, culturally competent service at all times.

8. Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

1. Assumes personal responsibility for Infection Control and Bloodborne Pathogen precautions to protect patients, SDHS staff, visitors, and self from risk of exposure.

The Transportation Driver reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Director of Operations.

The evaluation of work performance is ongoing, and will be performed by the Director of Operations. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior. Formal evaluation will normally be performed annually, but may be initiated at other times by the Director of Operations. Participates in peer review “360” feedback for evaluations as requested.

  • Valid Virginia driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Must pass background check, motor vehicle record (MVR) check, and drug screening
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Previous experience in transportation, healthcare, or customer service preferred
  • Ability to push, pull, and maneuver patients weighing 250+ pounds in a wheelchair
  • Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, and reaching to operate wheelchair equipment
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while driving
  • Patient-focused with a compassionate and empathetic approach
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of local roadways and navigation
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-demand situations
