Patent Attorney / Patent Agent

A well-regarded law firm in Upstate New York is seeking an experienced Patent Attorney or Patent Agent to join their Intellectual Property team. This role is ideal for professionals with 2–6 years of patent prosecution experience and a strong technical background. You will work alongside a collaborative legal team and support a diverse client base in a dynamic, innovation-focused environment.

Responsibilities

• Handle patent prosecution matters for clients across a range of technologies.
• Work closely with inventors, engineers, and in-house counsel to prepare and prosecute patent applications.
• Analyze complex technical disclosures in optics, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or aerospace engineering.
• Communicate technical concepts clearly to clients and team members.
• Contribute to annual billable hour expectations (1,800 hours).
• Collaborate with partners and associates on a variety of IP matters as needed.

Qualifications

• Admission to the New York State Bar, or willingness to obtain admission.
• 2–6 years of patent prosecution experience.
• Technical degree or background in optics, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or aerospace engineering.
• Candidates relocating from out of state may be temporarily hired as a Law Clerk pending bar admission.
• Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills.
• Strong client service mindset and ability to convey complex technical concepts.
• Writing samples preferred but not required.
