Patient Care Tech- Acute Observation Unit, Full Time, Day Shift

The Patient Care Technician I is responsible for providing safe, emotionally supportive, and individualized care for patients under the direction of nursing staff and medical providers.


Essential Functions

  • Provides basic patient care, including vital signs, blood glucose on adults, hygiene (bathing and oral care), positioning, toileting, linen changes, ambulation, range of motion, nutritional and hydration support, collecting lab specimens.
  • Competent to perform Foley catheter care.
  • Assists with the setup for medical procedures.
  • Promotes a safe patient environment: clutter-free, bed alarms, armband checks, etc.
  • Stocks supplies per departmental needs.
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA policies and procedures.
  • Assists the nurse in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Orient patients and families to patient rooms, patient activities, and hospital policies.
  • Documents patient care provided and I&O.
  • Communicates information to nursing and medical staff.
  • Promotes patient safety standards.
  • Completes efficient and purposeful patient rounding to promote patient safety and the patient experience.
  • Assists with post-mortem care.
  • Responsible to perform Direct Observer and Sitter duties as needed.
  • Admits, transfers, and discharges patients in the information technology systems. Quick admits to AllScripts and assignments in PeriWatch according to EMTALA laws.
  • Displays proper etiquette when answering the telephone.
  • Assists the Health Unit Coordinator with duties as needed.
  • Maintains patient census (accurate and up to date). Completes midnight census tasks as applicable.
  • Women and Infant Services (WIS) only: completes training for the infant security system, including management of the infant security system (admitting, transferring, discharging, alarms, band adjusts, etc).
  • WIS only: promotes safe sleep practices.
  • WIS only: screens newborns for hearing loss and identifies those who require further auditory assessment.

Other Duties


  • Participates in departmental and association wide informational meetings and inservices, including staff meetings, association wide forums, and seminars.
  • Reviews department and association wide policies and procedures annually. Develops and maintains new policies and procedures as needed.

Physical Demands


Exerts up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. The worker is exposed to contact with chemicals and infectious fluids, heavy lifting, constant standing, extensive close work, and extensive computer work.


Required Education and Experience


  • BLS CPR AED certification within 30 days of hire

Preferred Education and Experience


  • CNA, LNA, PCT, and/or EMT-B license
  • 1+ years of experience in a clinical setting

OSHA Exposure Category:


Involves exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
