POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Payroll Tax team leader reporting directly to the CFO. The Payroll Tax Manager will lead our payroll tax operations within a dynamic and growth-oriented PEO environment. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations while managing a high-performing team. The ideal candidate brings deep payroll tax expertise, thrives in deadline-driven environments, is expert at multi-tasking and prioritizing work across a small group and who excels in mentoring and developing team members.

PRIMARY DUTIES | RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all payroll tax functions, including tax filings, payments, reconciliations, and year-end reporting (W-2s, 941s, etc.).
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Provide expertise in resolving complex payroll tax-related issues working with our client facing team members with a proactive, solution-oriented approach.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of payroll tax professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, career development and continuous improvement.
  • Manage relationships with tax agencies, auditors, and third-party vendors.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes affecting payroll tax and implement necessary process or system updates.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Payroll, Finance, and HR teams to ensure accurate and timely tax reporting.
  • Drive process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls to ensure data integrity and compliance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to candidates who have the following:

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in payroll tax, preferably within a PEO, multi-state, or high-volume environment.
  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership or management role.
  • Deep knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax laws and regulations.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a track record of effective team leadership.
