Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the general supervision of the supervisor, PBX Operators monitor telephone consoles and process incoming and in-house calls in a quick and professional manner. Assists patients and visitors with information and directions to specific areas in the hospital; responds quickly and effectively to all emergency codes using proper hospital procedures, and maintains a professional level of work performance and image for the hospital.

PBX Operator Essential Duties/Functions

  • Operates the multiple position telephone consoles, Answers all incoming & inter-hospital calls within 30 seconds Pages over Public Address system, Pages physicians and authorized personnel only, within one minute of request
  • Pages over Public Address System, Pages physicians and authorized personnel only, within one minute of request
  • Places long-distance calls for patients when necessary, Calls placed within 1 minute of request, all calls will be placed, collect, credit card or billed to third-party number
  • Maintains print of alpha census each shift
  • Screens all incoming calls for recovery room, MICU, SICU and Surgery. No more than 3 valid complaints per month for incorrect call transfers
  • Maintains personnel "on-call" files from various departments. Keeps on-call file current
  • Takes messages and notifies personnel "on-call" during weekends, holidays and after hours by calling home number first, then paging. Notification will continue for 20 minutes Responds to all emergency codes within 5 seconds and proceeds with appropriate procedures

  • In the event of communication equipment failure, telephone, pagers, over-head PA system, etc., immediately contact Department Director and notify Telecom Company
  • Assists security by monitoring devices and paging/ calling on SpectraLink phones
  • Take calls for Housekeeping and Maintenance after hours, on weekends and on holidays. Log each request and page the on-call person

What qualifications you will need:

  • High school or equivalent
  • 1 year PBX experience, multi-line telephone experience and paging experience preferred.
  • Basic computer operations - Microsoft Word, EXCEL, Outlook. Basic telephone skills - answer, place on hold, transfer, courteous voice
