ORGANIZATION

The mission of Ravenswood Family Health Network (RFHN) is to improve the health of the community by providing culturally sensitive, integrated primary and preventative health care to all, regardless of ability to pay or immigration status, and collaborating with community partners to address the social determinants of health.

Ravenswood Family Dentistry (RFD) is a Federally Qualified Health Center’s dental clinic located in East Palo Alto, California. We offer dental care to people of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay. As a multi-cultural community dental clinic, our goal is to provide excellent comprehensive dental care to our patients and promote oral health.

POSITION SUMMARY

The part-time Pediatric Dentist is responsible for providing specialty pediatric comprehensive dental services and preventive dental care in a community health center setting and in other community settings such as school-based health center or mobile van. The Pediatric Dentist works with Dental Assistants and Hygienists, and supervises and mentors Dental Residents. This position is a member of the clinical team supporting PCMH standards and practices.

Duties and Responsibilities

To be performed in accordance with RFHN Policies and Procedures

  • Serves as a specialist member of a cross-functional team of Dentists that provides exceptional patient care, and performs four-handed dentistry.
  • Practice is limited to all aspects of pediatric patients and children and adults with special health care needs.
  • Performs appropriate consultations and treatments on scheduled referred patients and unscheduled walk-in emergency patients as needed.
  • Confers with both dentists and physicians regarding treatment plans and medical history interactions.
  • Supervises/mentors AEGD residents for pediatric related procedures.
  • Utilizes clinical examination and diagnostic imaging and instruments to evaluate oral health, diagnose diseases, and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Delivers treatment plans to patients along with an informed consent discussion surrounding treatment options, risks, benefits and alternatives.
  • Makes appropriate referrals and communicates with specialists as needed.
  • Creates treatment plans and prioritizes treatment based on medical necessity and quadrant dentistry.
  • Uses personal protective equipment to protect patients, staff, and self from infectious diseases.
  • Advises or instructs patients regarding preventive dental care, the causes and treatment of dental problems, or oral health care services.
  • Participates in consultations with other DDS staff as requested.
  • Follows established clinic and organizational protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Follows Standards of Care, Quality Assurance & Improvement Program and works collaboratively to achieve clinic goals.
  • Complies with all applicable State and Federal regulations, including but not limited to, Dental Board of California (DBCA), OSHA, Cal OSHA and infection control guidelines.
  • Ensures patient confidentiality consistent with state and federal law.
  • Records patient-dentist transactions as they occur in the patient’s dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient, and the care or treatment provided. Additionally, completes referrals, data collections, instruments, and other records or paperwork as required from time to time by the organization.
  • Educates individuals in the nature of oral health related conditions and in the general promotion of oral health related disease prevention.
  • Demonstrates good time management skills and evidence-based approaches to dental care.
  • Serves on the dental staff and other health center committees as assigned.
  • Assists in the provision of continuing education, on-the-job training, and the orientation of community health center staff as requested.
  • Designs, develops, and implements appropriate Dental Department policies, protocols and procedures as directed by the Chief Dental Officer, which are compliant with the most current accepted professional standards.
  • Participates in short-term and long-term program planning for the Dental Department and the organization, including development of goals and objectives.
  • Travels when necessary to fulfill the organization’s needs and attends meetings as necessary to represent the organization and/or the Dental Department.
  • Assists in the coordination and integration of the organization’s dental programs and services with other corporate programs and services for the welfare of the organization’s patients.
  • Responsible for personal full compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and center rules, regulations, protocols and procedures governing the practice of dentistry and the clinical provision of dental care as well as those relating to, but not limited to, personnel issues, work place safety, public health and confidentiality.
  • Participates in recruitment/retention activities of the organization as necessary.
  • As directed by the Chief Dental Officer, performs other related and/or necessary tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives.
  • Complies with all dental department protocols for clinical and administrative procedures.
  • Attends staff meetings, including peer review as requested.
  • Attends and participates actively in required meetings, trainings, and functions.
  • Maintains a positive relationship with practitioners in the community.
  • Communicates with dental laboratories and other outside vendors as needed.
  • Actively contributes to the achievement of PCMH goals and organizational strategic goals.
  • Supports the department with achieving budget goals and is cost conscious when requesting materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and related and/or necessary tasks to achieve clinic goals and objectives, as directed by the Chief Dental Officer.

General Agency Duties

  • Fosters an environment that promotes trust and cooperation among patients and staff; maintains strictest confidentiality concerning all patient and employee information.
  • Promotes and exemplifies in action, the mission, goals, policies, procedures and principles of RFHN to supervisees and other clinic staff.
  • Participates in outreach activities, agency advocacy, and serves on ad hoc committees, as requested.
  • Attends RFHN staff retreats and Board of Directors meetings, as requested by the Chief Dental Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from an accredited dental school in the US is required.
  • Completion of an accredited residency in Pediatric Dentistry is required.
  • Board certified from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry highly desirable.
  • Active unrestricted California state Dental License, NPI number, and DEA registrations.
  • Unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the State of California (Not applicable to commissioned NHSC/PHS officers).
  • Current CPR (BLS) and PALS certifications.
  • Eligible to apply for and obtain hospital privileges.
  • Understands the overall practice mission and works collaboratively to achieve long term and short- term goals for the clinic.
  • Understands practice scope consistent with the mission and values of the clinic.
  • Ability to be clinically fluent in Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge of public health principles and practices preferred.
  • Working knowledge and experience with practice management system software preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of pediatric dentistry and providing dental treatment to children and patients with special health care needs.
  • Ability to utilize pharmacological and non-pharmacological behavior management techniques to manage patient behavior.
  • Ability to work with parents to address concerns and develop treatment plans that apply evidence-based principles of practice.
  • Ability to operate all types of dental equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to work independently with high productivity and minimal supervision for patient care and follow-up.
  • Be willing to become credentialed to serve as volunteer UCSF/NYU faculty at clinic for AEGD residents.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate clinical privileges required.
  • FTCA coverage or private professional malpractice insurance obtainable.
  • Able to obtain hospital privileges.
  • 2+ years of experience in all phases of dentistry and auxiliary utilization in a clinic setting is required.
  • Cultural competence working in a diverse low-income community.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient settings required. Knowledge of the principles and practice of modern dentistry as related to public health organizations and community health programs as well as current social and economic problems pertaining to public health and their impact on primary health care.
  • Good customer service; ability to deal with patients in an effective and courteous manner, and maintain good working relationships with other members of the team.
  • Up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines as per current CDC guidelines strongly recommended.

The salary range for this position is $224,640 to $301,600 annually. However, the final base salary will be determined upon a number of individualized factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, education and certification levels, and departmental budget. We also consider internal equity with our current employees when making final offers.
