Assumes professional responsibility for providing learning experiences in comprehensive physical and health education and supervision of students in a supportive and positive climate. Develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to meet and exceed the Arizona Physical and Health Education Standards, using approved curricula, materials, and directives of the school. Achieving excellence requires that the Health and Physical Education Teacher work collaboratively with students, parents, community members, and members of the school staff.

Duties:

  • Within the Arizona Physical Education and Health Standards, plan and implement instruction to meet the essential goal of helping students acquire the knowledge and skills to promote personal, family, and community health.
  • Emphasis shall be on experiencing physical and health education within a variety of cultural contexts to include but not limited to athletics, dance, games, food, and celebrations.
  • Provide a variety of physical and health learning experiences so that students demonstrate skills and concepts learned through performances, portfolios, and a variety of communication mediums.
  • Engage the learners in differentiated learning experiences for the range of skill levels and developmental needs found in the physical education setting, managing, when appropriate, multiple instructional activities simultaneously.
  • Coordinate Physical and Health Education instruction with other teachers of the school.
  • Communicate regularly and assist classroom teachers with integrating this instruction into the classroom program.
  • Review periodically the Physical and Health Education curriculum for the school and recommend modifications when appropriate so that the curriculum serves as a framework for planning sequential instruction to address Arizona Physical and Health Education Standards within the cultural and developmental needs of the students.
  • Plan and supervise three quarterly community celebrations along with the Visual Arts and Music education teachers. Provide and supervise other opportunities for students to demonstrate individually and in groups the skills and talents developed in the Physical and Health Education program, bringing pride of accomplishment to students and to the school. These opportunities may occasionally be outside of the normal work day for teachers, including evenings and weekends and may include organized sports activities.
  • Provide instruction in the proper use of Physical Education and Health equipment and materials, ensuring safe use.
  • Prepare orders for Physical Education and Health supplies and equipment within the approved budget, following established purchasing procedures.
  • Maintain an inventory and store in an approved fashion of all Physical and Health Education supplies.
  • Provide and effectively organize a variety of materials, equipment, media, and community resources to support the instructional program, using school approved procedures.
  • Maintain in safe working condition all Physical and Health Education equipment.
  • Recommend budget needs to the Principal or designated supervisor.
  • Serve as a role model for students by maintaining good physical and health habits.
  • Serve as mentor to students demonstrating behavioral and/or academic difficulties.
  • Organize and supervise approved field trips to enhance school learning.
  • Organize and supervise community athletic events with the Paideia Family Center.
  • Maintain order in the classroom by adhering to The Paideia Academy school-wide and classroom discipline guidelines; consult with other professionals where there appears to be evidence of learning or physical disabilities, drug, or alcohol abuse, problems of social adjustment, or child abuse.
  • Maintain safe, secure, and healthy educational environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Intercept deterioration in physical or health achievement by counseling students with difficulties; drawing on the school Response to Intervention (RTI) resources for additional assistance.
  • Keeps parents informed by maintaining records of physical and health performance, attendance, and social acclimation; reporting on all elements of student development at parent-teacher conferences, both regularly scheduled and as-needed.
  • Provide student support services by monitoring halls, playground, and lunchroom; sponsoring student organizations or activities.
  • Update job knowledge by attending faculty meetings; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Enhance school's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Requirements:

Skills/Qualifications:

Bachelor or Master degree in Content Subject, Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card, hold and maintain current CPR and first aid certification, Teacher Certification with SEI Endorsement preferred.

  • Excellent experience in teaching and working with diverse students in the field of comprehensive health and physical education unless entering teaching from an alternative certification program
  • Experience teaching struggling students of diversity
  • Working knowledge of Arizona state standards – Physical Education and Health
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a high-stakes environment
  • Outstanding instructional skills, including the ability to motivate and challenge students and maintain an orderly classroom environment
  • Demonstrated expertise in physical education instruction
  • Strong sense of personal accountability for student achievement
  • Belief that all students should be held to high academic and content standards
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and other staff members
