Definition of Class
The Public Library Marketing Intern will assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of marketing and communications strategies that increase public awareness of library programs, services, and resources. This position is ideal for a student or recent graduate pursuing a career in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field who is passionate about community engagement and public service.
Nature of Work
Interns will gain experience in nonprofit/public sector marketing, build a portfolio of public-facing work, and contribute meaningfully to library visibility and access. By the end of the internship, the intern will have developed practical skills in campaign development, content creation, branding, and analytics in a real-world setting. Interns will refine skills in time management, project planning, and meeting deadlines that will serve them in future careers.
Work shall primarily be completed at Blasco Library, 160 E. Front Street, but may include any Erie County Public Library location or off-site events within the county. Intern must have reliable transportation at irregular intervals. Work schedule may vary and will not exceed 15 hours per week.
Duties & Responsibilities
Collaborate with library staff to create promotional materials (print, digital, and social media) that highlight programs, events, and services.
Draft content for newsletters, press releases, and social media.
Assist in developing and maintaining consistent branding and visual standards across platforms.
Track and analyze outreach efforts to help develop best practices for library marketing.
Participate in planning and executing marketing campaigns tied to library priorities or seasonal initiatives.
Help maintain the library’s social media calendar and engagement strategy.
Organize and archive promotional materials for internal use and historical reference.
Conduct community or patron surveys (when applicable) to support outreach strategy.
Interact with library staff and attend programs to gain understanding of library operations and audiences.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
Proficiency in social media (Meta and Youtube are required), videography, and photography.
Familiarity with design tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar.
Interest in libraries, public service, and community engagement.
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Collaborative, creative, and detail-oriented mindset.
Experience with podcasting and digital production is desired but not required.
Minimum Requirements
Current undergraduate or graduate student in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, graphic design, or related field; recent graduates will also be considered
