Position summary: A Per Diem SACS Counselor/Advocate provides support to victims/survivors of any type of sexual assault (past or recent) and to friends and family of sexual assault victims. Provides medical and legal advocacy to victims, outreach, and education to the community. Responsible for staffing the agency’s 24-hour hotline. Being a Per Diem Counselor/Advocate offers the opportunity to learn new skills, gain certification as a Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor/Advocate, and to work with diverse populations. Extensive training program and on-going training provided.
Work schedule: Minimum four (4) 12 hour hotline shifts per month - 6:00am - 6:00pm; 6:00pm - 6:00am; $75 for each 12 hour shift; plus additional hourly rate of $16.94 when services are required for hotline calls, hospital or police accompaniment.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in a human services or criminal justice program preferred, or current enrollment in a college program or minimum of two (2) years of experience in a human services field.
- Available weekends and some weekdays for day and overnight shifts.
- Meets all standards of employability, including attendance, reliability, and timeliness.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong listening skills and ability to respond calmly in crisis situations.
- Demonstrated empathy, open-mindedness, and a non-judgmental approach to client needs.
- Dependable and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable transportation and flexibility to respond during assigned shifts; proof of valid driver’s license and automobile insurance required.
- Must obtain and maintain certification as a Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor (training provided by the agency).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide crisis intervention and supportive counseling to victims/survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones.
- Offer in-person accompaniment, advocacy, and emotional support for clients and their support networks through hospital, police, and/or court processes.
- Cover a minimum of four (4) 12-hour hotline shifts per month, with flexibility for both weekday and weekend coverage.
- Maintain clear and timely communication with back-up advocates and managers who are on-call or on the hotline shift with you.
- Participate in monthly all-advocate meetings and complete at least six (6) hours of annual re-certification training and/or required meetings.
- Refer clients to appropriate additional services and communicate ongoing client needs to full-time SACS Advocates through verbal updates during the hotline shift. Hotline call sheets must be emailed by the end of your shift (or within six hours if you are still on a call).
- Accurately complete and maintain hotline call documentation.
- Occasionally assist with special events, outreach, and community education activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
- Must be willing to be certified as a sexual assault crisis counselor.
- Ability to travel frequently within service area. If using a personal vehicle, valid Connecticut driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of vehicle insurance is required.
- Knowledge of standard office environment. Includes work performed off site, in medical facilities and the court system.
- Hotline hours include evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.
