Position Summary
The Certified Medication Technician (Med Tech) is responsible for the safe administration of medications and treatments to residents in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) regulations for Personal Care Homes (55 Pa. Code Chapter 2600), physician orders, and facility policies and procedures. The Med Tech supports residents’ health, safety, and well-being while promoting dignity, independence, and quality of life.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed and in accordance with state regulations and facility policy.
- Accurately document medication administration in the Medication Administration Record (MAR).
- Observe residents for medication effectiveness, side effects, and adverse reactions; promptly report concerns to the nurse or supervisor.
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility.
- Monitor and record vital signs as assigned.
- Ensure proper storage, security, and disposal of medications, including controlled substances.
- Complete medication counts per shift and report discrepancies immediately.
- Communicate changes in residents’ physical, mental, or emotional condition to the nurse or Administrator.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies following facility protocols.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Participate in care planning meetings as requested.
- Provide compassionate support to residents and families.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized medication cart and work area.
- Attend required in-services and maintain continuing education requirements.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Successful completion of a Pennsylvania DHS-approved Medication Administration Training Program for Personal Care Homes.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- At least one (1) year of experience in a personal care home, assisted living, or long-term care setting preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Basic computer skills for electronic documentation (if applicable).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of medication administration procedures and safe practices.
- Understanding of Pennsylvania Personal Care Home regulations (55 Pa. Code Chapter 2600).
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
- Ability to recognize and report changes in resident condition.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Compassionate, patient, and respectful demeanor toward elderly residents.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist residents throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift and/or assist residents up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to push medication carts and equipment.
Work Schedule
- Part time position needed on 3-11 shift
Working Conditions
- Indoor healthcare environment.
