Position Statement: The Pharmacy Technician IV – Automation/Informatics is a specialized role responsible for supporting, optimizing, and maintaining pharmacy automation systems, the electronic health record (EHR), and computerized provider order entry (CPOE). This position partners with pharmacists, clinical informatics, information technology, vendors, and multidisciplinary clinical teams to analyze workflows, implement system enhancements, and ensure safe, efficient medication-use processes. The technician provides system troubleshooting, training, documentation, and project support while incorporating quality improvement, regulatory requirements, and data analysis into daily practice. In addition to informatics responsibilities, the role maintains required pharmacy technician competencies and supports operational needs as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serves as the subject matter expert for pharmacy automation systems, EHR, and CPOE functionality.
- Analyzes pharmacy and clinical workflows to identify opportunities for automation and system optimization.
- Coordinates planning, design, build, testing, training, implementation, and maintenance of pharmacy automation and informatics solutions.
- Troubleshoots system issues and works with vendors and IT to resolve errors and optimize performance.
- Collaborates with pharmacists, clinical informatics, IT, nursing, providers, and ancillary departments to support safe and efficient medication use.
- Supports system upgrades, enhancements, and new functionality, including pilot testing and full implementation.
- Assists with building and maintaining pharmacy-related databases, reports, and data analytics.
- Incorporates quality improvement, audit, and outcome measurement into system design and use.
- Maintains documentation, policies, procedures, and user materials related to pharmacy automation and informatics.
- Provides education, training, and support to end users and super-users; assists with orientation of new staff.
- Participates in project management activities related to technology changes and expansion.
- Stays current on pharmacy practice, informatics trends, regulatory standards, and organizational policies.
- Maintains core pharmacy technician competencies, including support as needed for operational duties.
- Represents the organization in vendor discussions and product enhancement opportunities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must possess an in-depth, advanced clinical base of knowledge related to pharmacy and five or more years of related experience.
- Must maintain all core competencies of pharmacy technicians (restocking, receiving, compounding, etc)
- Must possess knowledge related to the structure and management of databases.
- Understands the interrelationships involved with data integration and interfacing.
- Understands the processes needed to develop plans for utilization of computerized systems and to implement the changes needed to accomplish improved workflows.
- Ability to understand and work with workflows relating to medication administration, physician order entry, nursing and physician documentation.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, presentation skills, advanced analytical skills, be well organized, and maintain a highly professional manner and appearance.
