Job Summary
Prepares medications under the direction of a pharmacist. May measure, mix, count, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications according to prescription orders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Include the following and other duties as assigned:
Processing Prescriptions
- Receive written prescription or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate; requests missing information as appropriate and retrieves the patient’s pharmacy record(s) for verification by pharmacist. Process prescription refills to include refill confirmation when appropriate, review pending refills with the supervising pharmacist, generate refill documentation, and process third party claims adjudication.
- Completes prior authorizations.
- Enter prescription information into computer databases; accesses, processes, and retrieves data from the pharmacy system, including speed codes and drug interaction data, as state and federal laws permit.
- Establish and maintain patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients, and notations for pharmacists’ review.
- Transfer medication from vials to the appropriate number of sterile, disposable syringes, using aseptic techniques.
- Price and file prescriptions that have been filled.
- Mix pharmaceutical preparations, according to written prescriptions.
- Supply and monitor robotic machines that dispense medicine into containers and label the containers.
- Clean and help maintain equipment or work areas and sterilize glassware and maintain all required temperature logs, according to prescribed methods.
- Prepack bulk medicines, fill bottles with prescribed medications, and type and affix labels.
- Prepare prescriptions for home delivery; account for delivery receipts from driver for all delivered prescriptions; delivers medications to patients’ homes or medical facilities, as needed.
Insurance & Billing
- Prepare and process medical insurance claim forms and records.
Inventory Administration
- Maintain proper storage and security conditions for drugs.
- Maintains inventory control procedures; assists with physical inventory; assists in pharmacy returns; regularly check pharmacy stock for recalled, expired, and overstocked products; check in daily non-control medication orders to verify the correct items have been received.
- Orders products from appropriate sources; replenishes and orders vials, caps, bottles, bags, and supplies for pharmacy.
- Assists with full inventory and cycle counts.
Customer Service & Patient Relations
- Answer telephones, attend to walk-in customers, responding to questions or requests; escalates customer service issues to the Pharmacy Tech III.
- Assist customers by answering simple questions, locating items, or referring them to the pharmacist for medication information. Where allowed by law, informs the patient of the availability of generic alternative products.
- Operate Point of Sale (POS) system to accept payments from customers.
Front-End Administration
- Maintain and merchandise home healthcare products or services.
- Price stock and mark items for sale.

Pay: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
