Pharmacy Technician Specialist|Training Quality & Compliance

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician Specialist – Training, Quality & Compliance performs standard pharmacy technician duties while leading pharmacy training programs, competency assessments, and sterile testing across all locations. This role ensures regulatory inspection readiness by maintaining organized documentation, supports quality initiatives such as audits and improvement projects, and serves as a back-up for one-day-a-week clinic preparation, patient assistance drug processing, and drug and supply procurement.


JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pharmacy Technician duties and responsibilities:

  • Prepare medication orders by compounding/admixing medications under a pharmacist’s supervision

  • Under direct supervision of a pharmacist, check all orders for completeness of information, verify patient information, and review laboratory values

  • Under a pharmacist’s supervision, admix drugs as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner as per department guidelines, and prepare all drugs within CARTI policies and procedures for aseptic technique and handling hazardous drugs

  • Calculate correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents

  • Maintain inventory of patient and sample medications

  • Properly dispose of all materials used when mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs

  • Clean hood daily as stated in policy and procedures and assist with monthly cleaning

  • Check drugs monthly for outdates

  • Keep accurate logs on all patient assistance drugs

  • Maintain complete inventory control of medications, assuring proper inventory levels. Order supplies and medications. Receive and shelve medications. Ensure that standard drug supplies are in adequate supply in all departments.

  • Prepare labels

  • Have a thorough understanding of department automation, data entry, and report generation

  • Complete all initial and annual training and testing as required

  • Know and follow CARTI policies and procedures.

  • Proactively assists in the general pharmacy workflow as needed

Additional Duties and Responsibilities for the Specialist:

  • Maintains a thorough understanding of required training and competency evaluations
  • Develops and maintains a robust, structured training program
  • Schedules and conducts competency evaluations and sterile testing at all locations within the required frequency
  • Ensures regulatory and accreditation inspection readiness by organizing and maintaining documentation across all locations for training, competencies, and quality activities
  • Oversees and/or performs sterile compounding training for all locations, ensuring consistent delivery and documentation
  • Supports departmental quality initiatives, such as internal audits, process improvement projects, and data collection to support departmental needs
  • Serves as a back-up for travel clinic preparation, medication procurement, patient assistance medication management, and/or other operational functions, as needed.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of pharmacy systems, data entry, and report generation
  • Assists the pharmacist with scheduling and staff assignments in their assigned area
  • Assists the pharmacy team with other duties as assigned

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS: May be required to travel to satellite clinics


EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE, and REGISTRATION:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of study in an accredited college or university, preferred
  • Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy Technician License, required
  • Within six months of hire date, must obtain Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) Certification.
  • Within six months of hire date, must obtain Certified Pharmacy Technician Educator (CPTEd) Certification
  • Within six months of hire date, must obtain National Pharmacy Technician Association Sterile and Hazardous Compounding Certification courses and become certified
  • Must undergo and pass a criminal background check

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • 3+ years’ experience in a pharmacy with IV skills
  • 3+ years’ experience educating, instructing or training in pharmacy
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical and related medical terminology
  • Knowledge of metric and apothecary systems of weights and measurements
  • Knowledge of medical safety standards to assist in manufacturing and working with pharmaceutical substances
  • Knowledge of medications and the dispensing function to check for correctness
  • Ability to read and interpret prescription information
  • Advanced knowledge of aseptic technique
  • Understands and demonstrates aseptic techniques and procedures
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
