Core responsibilities
- Blood collection: Safely and efficiently draw blood from patients through methods like venipuncture and finger sticks.
- Patient preparation and comfort: Identify patients, explain the blood draw procedure, answer questions, and help calm anxious or nervous patients.
- Sample handling and labeling: Accurately label all collected specimens, ensuring their integrity and that they are prepared for transport to the lab.
- Safety and hygiene: Maintain a sterile and organized work environment by sterilizing equipment, following isolation procedures, and adhering to all health and safety standards.
- Record keeping: Accurately document patient information, log specimens, and maintain patient records.
Other duties
- Equipment maintenance: Ensure that all equipment is sterile and properly maintained.
- Specimen transport: Deliver or send samples to the laboratory for testing in a timely manner.
- Collaboration: Work with other healthcare professionals, such as nurses and lab technicians, to ensure accurate specimen collection and processing.
- Ancillary tasks: Take vital signs like blood pressure, pulse, and respiration, or perform bedside glucose tests.
