Phlebotomist

Summary 

Draws blood samples to be used for diagnostic tests, transfusions, or research.

This position is designated as an on-site, patient-facing role. In-office presence is an essential function due to the need for real-time collaboration with providers, direct interaction with patients and caregivers, and secure handling of health data in compliance with HIPAA.  

Qualification Requirements

Must be proficient in collecting blood specimens from hard-to-find veins and will be required to travel to various other work locations from primary work location.  

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years phlebotomy experience required or a combination of education and experience.


• Preferred experience with Orchard software, Laboratory Information Systems, and EPIC.


• Passage of a criminal background check, OIG exclusion and drug screenings.


• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Computer skills using Microsoft (MS) Excel and SharePoint, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Teams, Acumen, and various data management platforms.


• Comprehensive knowledge of the field's concepts and principles. 


• Exceptional interpersonal skills to provide excellent internal and external customer service. 


• Knowledge of ethics of confidentiality and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. 


• Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. 


• Manual dexterity. 


• Ability to understand and follow directions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:      None

Essential Functions:  ENA has determined that these duties cannot be effectively or securely executed in a remote environment without compromising patient care, data privacy, or operational standards. 

•  Uses various venipuncture methods to collect blood samples from patients. Transports samples to appropriate laboratories.  30%

• Performs standard tests on blood samples. 20%


• Processes samples for further examination. 10%


• Explains all phlebotomy procedures to patients.  10%


• Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.  10%


• Resolve unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing personnel, mid-levels, or laboratory personnel; refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.  20%

Physical Demands

• Required travel between sites.


• Hearing, visual acuity, talking.


• Reaching, grabbing, holding – fine motor skills.


• Extended periods in a stationary or standing position.


• Repetitive motion such as entering data into computer-based programs .


• Lift or move up to 25 pounds. Employee is expected to use appropriate ergonomics and tools such as hand carts for heavier loads.

Work Environment 

 Work is normally performed in a typical interior office medical and laboratory environment.  The noise level is usually moderate; however, may be higher on work benches during specimen processing. Some office environments have stairs.
