JOB TITLE: Phlebotomist DEPARTMENT: Laboratory
REPORTS TO: Lab Director STATUS: Full Time
JOB SUMMARY:
The Phlebotomist will collect blood from patients by performing venipunctures and/or capillary punctures while practicing universal safety precautions.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collect blood samples, urine specimens, stool specimens, nasal, and throat swabs on patients.
- Practice proper patient identification.
- Label specimens with verified patient information (name and DOB)
- Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient.
- Ensure that patient samples are drawn and returned to lab within 1-2 hours of collection.
- Centrifuge blood samples
- Keeping the phlebotomy area/room fully stocked at all times.
- Know specimen requirements and storage requirements for all laboratory testing including reference laboratory testing.
- Answer any phone calls directed to the lab.
- Order lab tests in the LIS.
- Practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to prioritize tasks and execute them in a timely manner.
- Excellent customer service skills and phone etiquette.
- Computer skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current phlebotomy certification
- At least 1 year of experience is preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Being on your feet for long periods of time.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
