Pathways Children’s School is a nonprofit private school dedicated to supporting students ages 5-21 with multiple and profound disabilities. Our transdisciplinary team collaborates to provide individualized education, therapy, and care, ensuring that every student can access and interact with their world in meaningful ways.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Physical Therapist (PT) to provide hands-on, school-based therapy that enhances students' mobility, positioning, and participation in their educational environment. The PT will work closely with a team of educators, therapists, and support staff to implement individualized therapy plans and provide training on mobility and adaptive equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver individualized physical therapy services to improve students’ mobility, postural control, balance, and coordination.
- Assess and implement adaptive and assistive equipment needs (wheelchairs, gait trainers, standers, orthotics, etc.).
- Develop and modify treatment plans aligned with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to promote progress.
- Collaborate with orthotists and participate in brace clinics, assisting with student evaluations, fittings, and caregiver training.
- Train classroom and support staff on safe transfers, use of durable medical equipment (Hoyer lifts, standing frames, etc.), and positioning techniques.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team including special education teachers, speech and occupational therapists, teachers of the visually impaired, nursing staff, and neuro-educational support staff (NESS).
- Document student progress on a quarterly basis and contribute to IEP meetings.
- Stay updated on best practices in pediatric physical therapy and related assistive technology.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Required: Valid New York State Physical Therapy License & CPR Certification
- Preferred: 2+ years of experience working with students with complex medical and physical needs
- Familiarity with NYC DOE Standard Operating Procedures Manual (SOPM) is a plus
- Strong knowledge of adaptive and assistive equipment for mobility and positioning
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs independently and physically assist students as needed
- Passion for working with children with severe medical, physical, and cognitive challenges
- Team-oriented with excellent communication and collaboration skills
