HPM is seeking a Pipe Layer Underground utilities (mid-level or senior level) to independently install pipe to line/grade and set structures with minimal supervision. We are hiring for our Englewood, CO based projects. This position will install and repair underground utility systems (water, sanitary sewer, storm drain, services, and related structures) safely, to grade, and per plans/specs while supporting efficient crew production. Core tasks include, but are not limited to: trenching support, pipe installation, structure setting, joint sealing, testing, and restoration.

Pay: $28 - $43 DOE

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lay PVC/C900/DIP/RCP/CMP/Elliptical RCP to grade using pipe lasers and cut sheets; verify slope.
  • Set manholes, inlets, junction boxes; build/finish channels to spec.
  • Install services (taps, corp stops, curb boxes), tracer wire/locating tape, thrust blocks.
  • Read plans/specs to identify utilities/conflicts; support as-built markups.
  • Perform trench box/shoring checks; lead a laborer/helper in safe work practices.
  • Operate small equipment (mini-excavator/skid steer) if qualified.
  • Must be able to set up jobsite safely (barricades, trench boxes/shoring per direction).
  • Assist with trench preparation, bedding, pipe handling, joint lubrication, and backfill.
  • Shoot/hold grade rod, be able to check slope with lasers/levels.
  • Cut PVC/DI to length, clean, prime, and glue gaskets/fittings.
  • Operate jumping jack/plate compactor, keep trench and work area organized.
  • Support testing (air/mandrel/sanitary; chlorination/pressure for water) as needed.
  • Ability to plan the day’s pipe run with the foreman/superintendent, confirming line/grade, structures, and quantities.
  • Ability to lead layout at the trench, including laser/transit setup and structure elevations.
  • Ability to execute complex tie-ins, large diameter utilities, deep cuts, bores, and confined space entries with proper permits.
  • Ability to effectively direct the excavator operator and crew for safe trench width, benching, bedding, and lift compaction, adjusting as needed for soil/water conditions.
  • Must have ability to interface with inspectors, ensuring compliance with plans/specs and CDOT and municipal standards as required.
  • Ability to mentor entry-level pipe layers
  • Ability to assist foreman with production tracking and material needs.

Education and Certification Requirements:

  • 1–3 years pipelaying (water/sewer/storm) experience with proven safety record.
  • Must be able to read a measuring tape and grade rod.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English
  • Proficient with lasers/levels; can check slopes and pipe alignment.
  • Knowledge of jointing methods, bedding classes, compaction lifts, and basic testing procedures.
  • OSHA-10 certification required
  • Preferred certifications: Confined space, Competent Person (Excavation), OSHA-30
  • Water distribution/sanitary collection testing experience preferred.

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be a US citizen due to federal contractor requirements in order to work on military bases and federal government projects.
  • Must be over the age of 18 to apply.
  • High school diploma or GED highly preferred.
  • A valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required, as per company standards.
  • Must have reliable transportation to changing jobsites as needed.
  • Must have ability to work overtime.
  • Must have ability to work in variable weather conditions outdoor in Colorado.
  • Must be able to accurately read, interpret and adhere to blueprints.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and written in English.
  • Motivated self-starter dedicated to excellence and proactive problem-solving.
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic, committed to achieving accurate and efficient results.
  • Deep commitment to safety, working closely with team members to prevent accidents/injuries. Must utilize appropriate PPE at all times, provided by HPM, such as hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest, gloves, etc.
  • Complete tasks within designated deadlines during standard operating hours and be available for overtime and weekend work as necessary.
  • Work safely and efficiently, adhering to both oral and written instructions, including safety protocols, equipment guidelines, and company policies.
  • Sit, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds frequently.
