Position Overview
Under the close supervision of the Shop Supervisor or Service Manager, this entry-level position is responsible for aiding in the repairing, rebuilding and servicing material handling equipment (forklifts) in-accordance with recommendations and specifications published by equipment manufacturers. In this entry-level position, thinking/decision making requirements are limited. While the candidate must be able to perform simple assignments (e.g. changing oil, removing components, etc.), most problems (80%) are referred to the supervisor (or higher-level service technicians) for resolution. The emphasis in this position is on attending and participating in assigned training classes, and gained experience and achieving proficiency in higher level skills.

Working Conditions
This position requires one to operate in ever changing environments. This is a physically demanding position requiring long periods of standing, kneeling and repeated motions. Brief to prolonged variations in weather, temperature, noise and noxious fume exposures. The position involves exposure to extremes in temperature and weather conditions. The candidate is required to work in areas which are dusty, greasy and slippery that would require careful footing. This position often involves exposure to high noise conditions (in excess of 85dBA), as well as frequent exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and materials.

The candidate must have normal visual acuity to read service manuals, work orders, and related materials as well as displays on testing and diagnostic equipment. The position requires the ability to stand/walk on uneven and varied terrain. Climb ladders and stairs, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, and crawl in varying amounts and varying intervals depending on the immediate task. This is a physically demanding job, requiring the frequent ability to lift up to 50 pounds from floor to workbench levels, sometimes without the use of material handling equipment. The ability to push and pull weights of more than 50 pounds in confined areas and from awkward positions is required. Sufficient manual dexterity, grip and upper body strength to properly use common hand tools and power tools is a necessity. The candidate is expected to have no conditions which prohibit the wearing of required personal protection equipment, such as safety glasses/goggles, safety-toe boots, hearing protection, welding hoods/face shields, and or respirators. Candidates are required to hear and communicate effectively to relay information and speak effectively with co-workers and customers. Candidates must possess no allergic or other conditions which would prohibit routine exposure to commonly-used chemicals and materials.
The nature of this position requires the candidate to purchase and maintain a personal inventory of power-assisted and ordinary hand tools (impact wrenches, hammers, ratchet and open-ended wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, etc.) The value of such tool investment can range from $500 - $15,000. The candidate has the option to participate in the Darr Technician Tool program to help minimize this initial investment.
