Job Description: Planning Engineer (High-Rise)

Location: Dubai, UAE

Sector: Main Contractor / Project Management

Reporting to: Project Manager / Planning Manager

Role Objective

To develop, maintain, and monitor the Master Project Schedule for a high-rise development. The Planning Engineer ensures that the sequence of construction (from shoring to final fit-out) is logically linked and that resources are allocated efficiently to avoid costly delays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Baseline Schedule Development: Create a detailed Level 4/5 Baseline Schedule using Primavera P6, including all engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities.
  • Critical Path Analysis: Identify the "Critical Path" (the sequence of stages that determines the project finish date) and highlight risks to the Project Manager.
  • Progress Monitoring: Conduct weekly site walks to verify actual progress against the planned schedule. Update the schedule with "Actual Start" and "Actual Finish" dates.
  • S-Curve & Reporting: Generate S-Curves (man-hours vs. time) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to visualize project health for stakeholders.
  • Productivity Analysis: Monitor the "Cycle Time" of typical floors (e.g., ensuring the 4-day slab cycle is maintained) and calculate labor productivity rates.
  • Resource Histograms: Develop manpower and equipment histograms to ensure the site has enough (but not too many) workers and machinery at any given time.
  • Delay Analysis (EOT): Identify and document delays caused by external factors. Assist the QS in preparing Extension of Time (EOT) claims using forensic planning techniques (e.g., Impacted As-Planned).
  • Look-Ahead Schedules: Prepare 2-week and 4-week "Look-Ahead" schedules for the Site Engineers to follow.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (essential for understanding construction logic).
  • Experience:
  • 6–10 years in project planning.
  • Must have worked on at least one High-Rise project (G+30 minimum) from start to finish.
  • Strong understanding of high-rise sequencing: Substructure $\rightarrow$ Core Wall $\rightarrow$ Typical Floors $\rightarrow$ Facade Closing $\rightarrow$ MEP Commissioning.
  • Software Expertise:
  • Expert Level in Primavera P6 (Professional).
  • High proficiency in MS Excel (for data manipulation and dashboarding).
  • Knowledge of Power BI for automated reporting is a significant advantage in 2026.
  • Familiarity with BIM (4D Planning) where the schedule is linked to a 3D model.

Core Competencies

  • Logical Thinking: The ability to visualize the entire construction sequence and how a delay in "Elevator Installation" affects "Internal Finishes."
  • Data Integrity: Ensuring that the progress reported is 100% accurate and not "sugar-coated."
  • Communication: Presenting complex timeline data in a simple, visual way that a Client or Foreman can understand.
  • Detail Oriented: Catching a missing "logic link" in a schedule of 5,000+ activities.
