Job Summary

The Plumbing and Utility Locating Technician is a critical field-based role responsible for executing natural gas line plumbing jobs. This position is also responsible for accurately detecting, tracing, and mapping underground public and private utilities. This position requires a strong technical aptitude, a background in commercial trades (especially plumbing), and the ability to operate independently while representing the company professionally.

Location & Travel

• Location: Primarily Work Site based.
• Travel: Up to 60% regional out-of-town travel is required, often involving multi-day projects and overnight stays. Off and home most weekends. Overtime available.

Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following daily duties:

• Specialized Plumbing System Training/Familiarity:
• Be able to be trained in or possess familiarity with various residential and commercial natural gas systems, including plumbing work with black pipe.
• Apply practical knowledge from trade experience to troubleshoot and interpret natural gas system layouts.
• Work independently to manage daily routine, prioritize work, and meet strict deadlines without constant supervision.
• Maintain, organize, and manage the stock and inventory of tools, black pipe supplies, and equipment on the company-provided truck.
• Provide first-rate customer service by clearly communicating findings, and maintaining a professional demeanor with clients and site personnel.
• Utility Locating:
• Trace and locate both metallic and non-metallic utility lines (sewer, water, electric, gas, cable, phone, etc) using advanced equipment.
• Aid in the operation of CCTV sewer camera systems and sonde locators to visually inspect pipe interiors and determine exact pipe depth and position.
• Perform locates using electromagnetic (EM) locators and other methods to mark public utilities (gas, electric, telecom, water, etc).
• Ensure all specialized locating, inspection, and safety equipment is clean, calibrated, and operational before dispatch.

Required & Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Experience: Two (2) years of verifiable experience in any commercial trade (e.g., HVAC, electrical, construction, survey). Ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Experience: Two (2) years of dedicated plumbing experience (commercial preferred), demonstrating familiarity with pipe materials and system installation. Commercial Drivers License (CDL) a plus.

Driving and Travel: Valid Driver’s License with an excellent driving record; must be willing and able to travel regionally up to 60% (multi-day, overnight stays).

Physical: Ability to lift/carry up to 100 lbs. and work safely outdoors in various weather and field conditions.
