Job Title: Policy, Community & Government Advocacy Lead

Reports To: Director of Programs & Strategy

Job Purpose

The Policy, Community & Government Advocacy Lead plays a critical role in advancing Project Angel Food’s mission by managing government contracts, monitoring key health and nutrition policies, and representing the organization in community and governmental forums.

This position serves as a bridge between programs, policy, and communications, ensuring that the organization’s impact is clearly represented to funders, partners, and policymakers. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, policy-savvy, and skilled at building relationships that strengthen Project Angel Food’s role in the Food Is Medicine movement.

Key Outcomes

  • Fulfillment of all government contract obligations with accuracy, accountability, and compliance.
  • Timely policy updates and advocacy briefs to inform program strategy and leadership decision-making.
  • A steady pipeline of relevant public funding opportunities shared with the Development team.
  • Clear, accurate, and compelling program and policy narratives developed in collaboration with the Communications Department.

Core Responsibilities

Government Contracts & Compliance

  • Administer and oversee government contracts, including but not limited to agreements with LA County Department of Public Health Ryan White Program, LA County Community Services Block Grants, and the City of West Hollywood.
  • Ensure accurate service delivery tracking and reporting in coordination with Program and Grants Managers.
  • Work with Client Services, Finance, and Grants teams to prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual invoices and cost reports.
  • Represent Project Angel Food at public meetings, such as commissions on Older Adults, Disabilities, HIV, and local city boards as appropriate.
  • Maintain organized records to ensure full compliance with all contractual obligations.

Policy Research & Advocacy

  • Monitor local, state, and federal policy developments relevant to medically tailored meals and related health initiatives.
  • Draft concise policy briefs and internal updates to keep leadership and program teams informed.
  • Translate updates from Food Is Medicine Coalition and other advocacy bodies into clear internal recommendations and action items.
  • Support leadership in shaping advocacy priorities aligned with organizational goals.

Development & Funding Support

  • Identify and track relevant city, county, state, and federal funding opportunities; summarize eligibility, deadlines, and fit.
  • Maintain a simple funding tracker and communicate opportunities to the Development team.
  • Participate in select meetings and networks to build relationships with municipalities, healthcare providers, and potential funding partners.
  • Provide Development with policy and program context for funding proposals and reports.

Programs & Policy Communications Liaison (in collaboration with Communications Department)

  • Work closely with Communications to ensure messaging about programs, policy, and impact is clear, accurate, and consistent.
  • Provide program and policy content, client stories, and data for use in grant proposals, media, website updates, and event materials.
  • Coordinate interviews and access to program information for Communications projects.
  • Support messaging integration for major initiatives such as Lead with Love and Angel Awards, ensuring program impact is accurately represented.

Community & Partner Engagement

  • Represent Project Angel Food in community forums, government hearings, and key public events.
  • Coordinate touchpoints with clinics, healthcare providers, case management agencies, and peer organizations (e.g., open houses, webinars, briefings).
  • Maintain a shared community calendar and stakeholder list, ensuring leadership is well-prepared for engagements.
  • Capture notes and follow-ups from external meetings to inform ongoing strategy and partnerships.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in nonprofit policy, government relations, or development; experience in health, nutrition, or food security strongly preferred.
  • Excellent writing and synthesis skills, with the ability to translate complex policy into accessible language.
  • Proven ability to manage contracts and compliance with attention to detail.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with government, healthcare, and community stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with public funding processes, health policy, and the food-is-medicine movement preferred.
  • Organized, self-motivated, collaborative, and passionate about supporting people living with serious illness.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour

Expected hours: 32 – 48 per week
