Position Summary:
The Pottery Studio Assistant supports the daily operations of the ceramics studio, ensuring a clean, safe, and organized environment for artists, instructors, and students. This role involves assisting with studio maintenance, materials preparation, firing schedules, class setup, and general studio support. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, and has a strong interest or background in ceramics.
Key Responsibilities:
Studio Maintenance & Organization
- Clean and maintain workspaces, tools, wheels, and equipment daily.
- Recycle clay, mix glazes, and prepare materials as directed.
- Load, unload, and maintain kilns (bisque and glaze firings).
- Monitor inventory and restock supplies (clay, glaze materials, tools, etc.).
- Ensure all safety and cleanliness standards are followed.
Class & Workshop Support
- Assist instructors in class setup and cleanup.
- Help students with basic techniques and studio etiquette as needed.
- Prepare demo materials, wedging clay, or setting up throwing stations.
- Organize finished work for pickup and manage labeling/tracking systems.
Administrative & Customer Service (as applicable)
- Greet visitors, answer basic studio questions, and support sign-ups.
- Photograph and catalog student or artist work for records/social media.
- Help with events, exhibitions, and community workshops.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience with ceramics, pottery, or a similar medium preferred.
- Basic knowledge of clay bodies, glazes, and firing processes.
- Comfortable working in a studio environment (lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for long periods).
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or on a team.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
Preferred Skills (Optional):
- Experience with kiln operation and maintenance.
- Familiarity with studio safety and material handling.
- Customer service or teaching experience.
- Photography or social media experience for studio promotion.
