Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The Navy’s Operational Energy Office develops policy and informs departmental investment in innovation, research and development, and integration of power and energy technologies and systems to:
-
Extend operational reach of current and future weapons systems through more effective use of energy
-
Reduce energy consumption and external energy logistics requirements to forward-deployed strike groups
-
Increase energy resilience of forward bases, supply depots, and cooperative security locations to deliver more energy to the warfighter
-
Increase the effective use, conversion, storage, distribution, and control of energy to enable integration of future weapons and sensors into platforms
-
Foster and guide an energy culture in sailors and marines through policy, training, and education
The Power & Energy Systems Engineer / Modeler supports the Navy Operational Energy Office and PMS 406 in the development and application of digital engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) models used to analyze shipboard power and energy architectures. This position will support development and sustainment of the Navy Dynamic Systems Model (DSM), an MBSE environment used to represent shipboard power, propulsion, combat, and mission systems interactions. The model is used to evaluate energy use scenarios, support requirements development, and inform investment decisions related to operational energy technologies and future platform capabilities. The role will also contribute to Herren Associates’ broader Digital Engineering capability, DIMENSiON, which provides the digital architecture, modeling infrastructure, and integration environment that enables DSM development and supports application of model-based analysis across related Navy initiatives.
The Power & Energy Systems Engineer / Modeler will define and model shipboard power and energy system architectures using MBSE methods and SysML-based tools to provide bi-directional requirements tracing, define and articulate system states, and execute operational and energy-use scenarios. analyses support identification of system efficiencies, integration pathways for emerging technologies, and informed investment decisions for power and energy technologies across naval platforms. The engineer will work as part of a multidisciplinary team collecting data, developing models, and performing analysis to support the needs of the Operational Energy Office, Technical Warrant Holders, program offices, and other members of the naval technical and acquisition communities. Responsibilities may include development of system architecture models, representation of system states and energy flows, integration of shipboard subsystems within MBSE environments, and preparation of technical analyses, reports, and briefings to support stakeholder decision-making.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
-
BS in Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering or IT
-
3+ years technical experience in engineering systems maintenance or shipyard programs to include experience developing reports and briefs.
-
Functional proficiency with Model-Based Systems Engineering tools such as CAMEO, IBM Rational Rhapsody, Innoslate, MagicDraw, SPARX Enterprise Architect, or similar applications.
-
Functional proficiency with Microsoft Office suite to include Word, Power point, Excel, and Project.

-
Experience developing SysML architecture models for complex engineering systems
-
Direct experience with Navy surface ship engineering systems, particularly power generation and electrical distribution systems
-
Experience with power system modeling, electrical plant load analysis (EPLA), or shipboard energy systems analysis
-
Experience supporting Navy program offices, warfare centers, or NAVSEA technical authorities
-
Experience developing and delivering formal reports, information papers, and briefings for program manager and Technical Warrant Holder communities
-
Functional proficiency with MATLAB, MATHCAD, or similar analytical tools
-
Familiarity with digital engineering environments and model repositories supporting Navy system architecture development
