Qualification:

ü CDA (Child Development Associate Degree)

ü 2500 documented hours working with children

ü Associates Degree

ü Bachelors Degree

ü Act 33, 34 and Criminal FBI clearances

ü Mandated Reporting

ü A theoretical and practical understanding of Developmentally Appropriate Practice

*Any Assistant Teachers hired, must either have 2500 documented hours working with children, or are actively pursuing a CDA.

Training:

Assistant Teacher must annually obtain:

ü 24 hours of appropriate training as required by NAEYC

ü Fire Safety Training

ü Emergency Plan training

Assistant Teacher must obtain every 2 years:

ü Physical examination with TB test by Mantoux method only upon hire

ü Infant/Child CPR training

ü Pediatric First Aid training

General Responsibilities:

1. Help supervise and insure the safety and well-being of children at all times, being alert for the needs and/or problems of the children as individuals and as a group. Children will be supervised primarily by sight with short intervals by sound, with teachers checking on children frequently who are out of sight (ex. Children using the bathroom must be checked on frequently.)

2. Be familiar with and follow all preschool policies stated in the Personnel Policies and procedures Manual.

3. Attend scheduled (2) open houses per year, orientation, parent conferences, on public relations function, one board meeting, staff meetings and in-service training.

4. Report to the Director any special needs, problems, program needs and any cases of suspected child abuse or neglect.

5. Work cooperatively with staff members and parents.

6. Time card should be filled out daily and submitted to Business Manager 2 days before pay day (payday is biweekly, every other Thursday).

7. When absent, assistant teacher will notify the Director. Assistant Teacher and Director will work cooperative to find an appropriate sub for their classroom.

8. Assistant Teacher will be evaluated annually by the Director and will also complete self-evaluation from annually.

9. Assistant Teacher will plan and document all 24 hours of STARS professional development, as well as keep their PDR (professional development record) up to date. Assistant teacher and Director will meet at the end of the school year to take a look at self-assessment and Director evaluation to plan professional development for the next school year together. This process will include self-reflection and setting goals for improvement.

Teacher/Student Interaction:

1. Greet children as they enter the classroom. Dismissal may be conducted by teacher and/or assistant teacher.

2. Complete daily attendance chart promptly.

3. Ensure that children wash their hands upon entering the preschool, after toileting and before eating.

4. Sit with the children during snack time and play time.

5. Handle discipline promptly and in accordance with stated policy on discipline. Always keeping in mind that when directing a child, the teacher shall move over to where the child is and speak in a warm nurturing tone instead of yelling across the classroom.

6. Observe children’s progress on an ongoing basis and give input to the lead teacher with 3 written assessments and 2 parent/teacher conferences to be held yearly. Assistant teacher will also sit in on parent/teacher conferences.

7. If a child is not picked up on time, either the teacher or assistant will make a phone call to the child’s parent, staying with the child until the parent or guardian arrives. If a staff member cannot stay with the child, the child may be placed in extended care program, the permission of the extended care supervisor and the contingency that the DPW staff/child ratio is not exceeded.

Curriculum Development:

1. Assist with the planning and implementation of curriculum for assigned classes using developmentally appropriate activities through art, music, play, language, science, math, social studies and fine and gross motor development.

2. Advise Director of materials needed for classroom as well as needed repairs.

3. Work as a team with the lead teacher in setting up, decorating and cleaning responsibilities.

Parent/Teacher Communication:

1. Design, distribute and post snack schedule for the parents. Preschool snack schedule should be posted at the beginning of each month. Coordinate snack schedule with other classes for children in multiple classes. Keeping in mind that we want to help make this as easy as possible for the parents.

2. Document daily snack served (food and drink) outside the classroom for parent reference.

3. Provide input for and attend semi-annual parent/teacher conferences.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $12.00 - $14.00 per hour
