Pre-Med Research & Clinical Fellow – Dermatology

Job Expired

Job Overview
Research & Clinical Fellow (Pre-Med Gap Year)

Caroline Campbell Dermatology (@napaderm) is a physician-led dermatology and aesthetics practice in Napa, California. We provide medical dermatology, skin cancer care, wound care, and cosmetic treatments in a highly personalized private practice setting.

This position is ideal for a pre-medical student seeking substantive clinical experience, research involvement, and physician mentorship prior to applying to medical school.

Position Details

  • Part-time or full-time depending on the needs of the practice and qualifications of the candidate
  • Flexible scheduling based on clinic needs and applicant availability
  • 1–2 year commitment preferred

The Opportunity

As a fellow, you will work directly with Dr. Caroline Campbell, a board-certified dermatologist with an active academic appointment. Because we are a small and growing practice, you will gain exposure to many aspects of patient care, clinical operations, research, and practice development that are often difficult to access in larger healthcare systems.

This role is intentionally flexible and designed to provide meaningful experience while supporting your medical school application. Successful fellows are adaptable, proactive, detail-oriented, and willing to jump in wherever needed.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with patient intake, documentation, and clinical workflow
  • Supporting patient communication, scheduling, and administrative operations
  • Learning how to communicate clearly and professionally with patients both in person and by phone
  • Helping patients navigate treatment plans, pre- and post-procedure instructions, and common clinical questions
  • Assisting with research projects, case reports, literature reviews, and data organization
  • Supporting educational initiatives, social media content, and patient education materials
  • Helping identify operational gaps and contributing solutions in a growing practice

Why This Fellowship Is Different

This fellowship is designed to support your medical school application while providing real-world clinical experience. You will develop skills in patient communication, professionalism, documentation, clinical reasoning, and healthcare operations while working closely with a physician mentor.

Because of the size of the practice, fellows often gain a broader understanding of patient care than is possible in many traditional shadowing roles. You will observe how clinical decisions are made, how patients navigate treatment plans, and how a modern medical practice functions behind the scenes.

Research is an important component of this position. Fellows may have opportunities to contribute to case reports, abstracts, literature reviews, educational projects, and manuscript preparation. Dr. Campbell will work closely with fellows to identify projects that align with their interests and medical school application timeline whenever possible.

Academic opportunities are not guaranteed and depend on project availability, initiative, writing ability, follow-through, and overall contribution. However, motivated fellows will receive significant mentorship and support in pursuing meaningful scholarly work, and we will work together to ensure that we can add to your application.

Clinic hours are dedicated primarily to patient care. Fellows should expect that some research, writing, literature review, and project development may occur independently outside of scheduled clinic hours.

In addition to clinical and research mentorship, Dr. Campbell is happy to provide guidance regarding personal statements, interview preparation, professional development, and navigating the medical school application process.
