<Overview>
The Library position at Kirk School plays a central role in maintaining and strengthening our school’s rich culture of reading. The librarian works closely with students and teachers to foster a love of literature by reading aloud to classes, guiding students in book selection, and creating an inviting, engaging library environment. This role also includes managing and maintaining the Follett library system to ensure the collection is well-organized and accessible. Beyond the school day, the librarian has the opportunity to lead after-school enrichment classes such as Book Club or Creative Writing, and may also participate in K-Camp, our summer program, for additional compensation. This is a dynamic role for an educator who is passionate about literacy, community, and inspiring lifelong readers.
<Duties>
- Foster and maintain a strong school-wide culture of reading
- Read aloud to classes and promote engagement with literature across grade levels
- Support students in book selection and encourage independent reading habits
- Collaborate with teachers to support curriculum and classroom learning through library resources
- Partner with teachers to support in-class research, including guiding students in the use of non-fiction texts and resources
- Develop and maintain a strong, accessible non-fiction section that supports student learning and inquiry
- Manage and maintain the Follett library system, including cataloging, circulation, and inventory
- Organize and maintain an inviting, well-ordered, and accessible library space
- Curate and update the library collection to reflect student interests and diverse perspectives
- Lead optional after-school enrichment classes such as Book Club and Creative Writing
- Proven experience working with children in educational settings, with strong classroom management skills
- Knowledge of library services, cataloging procedures, and integrated library systems (ILS) used in school environments
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with students, teachers, parents, and staff
- Demonstrated ability to teach literacy education, research techniques, and the use of learning technology tools
- Strong organizational skills to manage library collections, record-keeping, and resource allocation efficiently
- Experience in classroom teaching or supporting classroom instruction is highly desirable
- Familiarity with behavior management strategies to maintain an orderly yet welcoming library environment
- Writing skills necessary for creating instructional materials, reports, and promotional content for the library program
<Requirements>
- Experience working with elementary and/or middle school students
- Strong knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, including both fiction and non-fiction
- Ability to foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging reading environment
- Experience supporting student research and guiding the use of non-fiction texts and resources
- Familiarity with library management systems (experience with Follett Destiny preferred)
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work closely with teachers and staff
- Excellent communication and classroom management skills
- Creativity, flexibility, and a genuine enthusiasm for working with children
- Bachelor’s degree required; teaching credential or library/media certification preferred

Pay: $28.00 - $32.00 per hour
