Job Summary
The Press Tool Designer is responsible for designing sheet metal press tools such as progressive, tandem, transfer, and single-stage dies based on customer part drawings and specifications. The role involves concept development, detailed design, manufacturability considerations, and coordination with tool room, production, and try-out teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Study customer part drawings, GD&T, material specifications, and feasibility inputs
- Develop tool concepts for:
- Progressive dies
- Tandem dies
- Transfer dies
- Compound / single-stage tools
- Prepare strip layout and scrap shedding optimization
- Calculate press tonnage, shut height, die size, and safety factors
- Design tool components:
- Punches, dies, inserts
- Strippers, lifters, pilots
- Cam mechanisms (if applicable)
- Prepare detailed manufacturing drawings and BOM
- Ensure design compliance with standards (DIN / ISO / company standards)
- Coordinate with:
- Tool room manufacturing team
- Try-out and production teams
- Quality and CFT teams
- Support tool trials, modifications, and buy-off activities
- Implement design improvements based on try-out feedback
- Maintain proper design documentation and revision control
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of:
- Sheet metal forming processes
- Tool steels and heat treatment
- Clearances, allowances, and tolerances
- Experience with CAD software:
- AutoCAD
- 3D CAD
- Understanding of press operations and press safety
- Knowledge of:
- Scrap reduction techniques
- Cam and mechanism design
- Die maintenance considerations
Preferred / Added Advantage
- Experience in automotive BIW or supplier environment
- Exposure to simulation software (AutoForm / PAM-STAMP – optional)
- Experience in zero-tryout or digital die development
