Preventative Maintenance Technician

POSITION SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position serves as the preventative maintenance technician for Zoo facilities. This position performs journey level preventative maintenance skills in five (5) or more crafts, or building trades such as HVAC, utility services, electrical, painting, carpentry, plumbing, cement masonry, dry wall, machinist, roofing, fleet vehicles, welding, doors/hardware or other recognized trade and maintenance areas.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as the primary preventative maintenance technician. Assists the Maintenance Supervisor in training team members, assigning tasks, providing first-level technical support, and solving work-related issues. Advises the supervisor on major problems, supports Zoo and departmental goals, helps assess job skill requirements and training needs, and prepares daily, weekly, and monthly reports.
  • Performs journey-level tasks in a variety of building crafts and trades with strong knowledge of preventative maintenance techniques, methods, standards, procedures, and safety protocols. Ensures that all preventative maintenance tasks are properly scheduled and remain on track to avoid backlogs.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, diagrams, work orders, and plans. Develops or reviews necessary drawings or layouts to communicate effectively with supervisors and team members and to secure any required approvals.
  • Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs various building systems and equipment. Handles complex tasks and projects from setup through cleanup. May operate heavy equipment as needed.
  • Safely operates a full range of hand and power tools, lifts, forklifts, and other specialized equipment required for preventative maintenance work.
  • Utilizes computerized facilities management software and mobile work order systems to receive, document, and complete tasks. Enters equipment data, asset changes, and specification information into the system.
  • Verifies that all Zoo assets have appropriate preventative maintenance work orders and task lists assigned. Runs regular reports (daily, weekly, monthly) to manage workload, track hours, and monitor the type and volume of work performed.
  • Participates in seasonal snow plowing and ice removal operations. Collaborates with team members to ensure safe and timely clearing of paths and workspaces.
  • Performs other duties and special assignments as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NEEDED


  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in building and preventative maintenance, preferably in a zoo, campus, or similar facilities environment.
  • Ability to coordinate with and support maintenance staff to develop solutions, meet work deadlines, and maintain a positive and professional attitude.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills with the ability to mentor others.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with guests, team members, and other departments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Skilled in the use of Facilities work order systems, including mobile platforms, to receive and assign tasks, update asset records, enter equipment specifications, and generate daily, weekly, and monthly reports to monitor workload and performance.
  • Experienced in troubleshooting and diagnosing issues related to fire alarm systems, HVAC, building controls, electrical, plumbing, and other building systems, offering both immediate and long-term solutions.
  • Maintains a clean, professional appearance and demonstrates pride in work.
  • Comfortable working in a team-oriented environment and fostering collaboration.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Physically able to stand, walk, bend, lift, and perform manual tasks throughout the day.
  • Willingness to work in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid Utah Driver’s License required.
  • Technologically proficient and adaptable to evolving systems and tools.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge of the standards, practices, materials, and methods used in three or more skilled trades, such as HVAC, utility services, electrical, painting, carpentry, plumbing, cement masonry, drywall, machining, roofing, welding, doors/hardware, or other recognized maintenance trades. Familiarity with applicable building codes and ordinances is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with HVAC and plumbing control systems, including the ability to effectively troubleshoot and repair control-related issues.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION

  • Utah’s Hogle Zoo is a drug-free workplace. All employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • Provide a negative TB test prior to hire date and maintain TB testing through course of employment
  • A valid driver’s license is required.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position involves tasks requiring a variety of moderately heavy physical activities which generally involve muscular strain. Requires activities related to walking, standing, bending, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions. Exposure to cleaning, and sanitation chemicals heat, cold, noise, dust, and fumes. Requires lifting of up to 80 lbs.
