Victims of Violence Intervention Program, operating Artemis House Shelter, is seeking a part-time (20-32 hrs/week Prevention Education Specialist to join our team!

The Specialist will implement prevention education programming regarding domestic and sexual violence, sex trafficking, and stalking. The position will also lead the volunteer mentor program and assist in training and supervising volunteer mentors.

Victims of Violence Intervention Program, best known for running Artemis House Shelter in Spearfish, is a non-profit organization serving people affected by domestic violence and sexual assault in Lawrence, Harding and Butte counties in South Dakota. VVIP staff is made up of committed people working together to end violence in all forms in our service area.

Required experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree. Human Services or related field preferred (Education, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Social Work).
  • If no degree, must have some education and experience in Human Services field of work.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of domestic violence and sexual assault issues
  • Community resource and agency knowledge
  • Sensitivity and awareness of various local cultures of clients
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, able to perform duties with speed and accuracy, handle multiple tasks at once, work well under pressure, sound judgment and decision making skills, courteous and helpful, strong team player, maintain confidentiality, public speaking.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite

Duties, Responsibilities and Expectations:

1. Coordinated Community Response and Networking

o Network and build effective working relationships between VVIP and relevant stakeholders: law enforcement, the medical community, other community service providers, schools and public agencies.

o Travel to attend county and community functions relevant to sexual assault and domestic violence issues.

o Assist in organizing awareness campaigns and community events to promote prevention and awareness.

o Travel to represent VVIP at community events including tabling and public speaking.

  • Assist in the development of rural/community services including coordinating the Sexual Assault/ Domestic Violence Response Teams.

2. Awareness and Education

o Create and execute prevention strategies to inform the community about VVIP services and create awareness about domestic and sexual violence prevention.

o Develop and deliver engaging education programs for schools, community organizations, and local agencies.

o Create and disseminate educational materials.

o Coordinate and facilitate training sessions and workshops for for local law enforcement, medical, community resource providers, educators, collaborating agencies, and community groups.

o Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs through feedback, surveys, and make recommendations for improvement.

o Stay informed about current trends, research and best practices in domestic and sexual violence prevention.

3. Volunteer Mentor Program Lead

o Assist with volunteer program recruitment, training, and implementation.

o Assist with development of mentor program training materials and methods.

o Train volunteers to serve as mentors for clients.

o Provide volunteer supervision and on-going training.

4. Identify program needs, opportunities for employee training, volunteer recruitment and communicate suggestions to Director.

5. Assist with fundraising events.

6. Assist with program needs, record keeping and other duties as assigned.

7. Maintain client confidentiality.

8. Promote positive VVIP public image.

9. Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by the VVIP Board of Directors.

Special Considerations: This position is dependent upon programming needs and funding availability.

Must be able to submit to a background check.

This is a part-time non-exempt hourly position. Hours may vary based on events and speaking engagements but will mainly be M-F. Pay range will begin at $18.25/hr and increase dependent on experience/qualifications. Benefits include paid time off and holiday pay.

Pay: $18.25 - $22.00 per hour
